INDEPENDENT READING
Weekly

Weekly homework  - 30 minutes, 3 times a week!

Your child's assignment -
Each week your child is expected to read a book at home at  least 3 times for 30 minutes.   Your child may choose any book to read, but it must be a book. Most students choose to read their book project book (more on that, later!) during this homework reading time.

The way you can help -
We ask that you sign your child's planner in the reading block each time your child completes a 30 minute assignment.  Some parents choose to sign the reading block once a week by stating "Read 30 minutes, 3x" and then signing the block.  It's your child's responsibility to get your signature!

Monthly

Monthly assignment  - One book project each month!

This month:   Newbery Character Poster

Your child's assignment -
Your child will complete one book project each month.  Your child will receive written directions each month for the current book project.  The assignments are also posted here.  Each month a different genre and project is assigned.  Most of the work for the book project is done outside of school, although your child may use base class to work on book projects.

The way you can help -
Check in with your child early in the month to find out what the next book project assignment is.  Help your child pick out an appropriate book if necessary.  Ask your child to verbally summarize what he or she is reading every few days.  Most book projects will require a visual element as well as a written and/or oral presentation.   Poster board is usually available in the classroom for most book projects; however, your child may wish to obtain special items.  Please allow your child to complete the visual element of the book project independently although your suggestions are helpful.  Offer to listen to your student practice an oral presentation several times before the due date.  If you see spelling or grammatical errors in your child's writing, just tell your child there are errors and encourage your child to find the errors independently.  Encourage your child to make his or her own corrections!

READING COUNTS Check here to see if your book is in the READING COUNTS program.  If so, take the short quiz to test your comprehension!
