This month's book project: POETRY                       Project: Illustrated Booklet and Recitation

Due Date:  Friday, May 11, 2001
Choose a poetry anthology (a book of poems). It may be a collection of poems by one author, or a collection of poems by many authors.   You will need to have your book approved by your teacher.  If the book is very long, we will determine together how much of it you will have to read.

Here's what you need to do:
1. As you read, find at least 5 examples of figurative language.  You may find these examples in any of the poems you read in your book.  You must have at least 3 of the types of figurative language we've studied (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, or alliteration).  You may find examples of all 5 if you wish.
2.  These examples of figurative language will be part of the booklet you will be creating as your project.  Copy your examples neatly onto paper that will go into your booklet.  Put quotation marks around the examples.  Identify the title and author of the poem for each example.  Identify the type of figurative language it illustrates.
3.  Choose your 3 favorite poems.  Copy each neatly onto a separate sheet of paper.  Identify the title and author of the poem.  Proofread to be sure you have copied the poems correctly.
4.  Illustrate each of the 3 poems you chose.  Your illustration may go on the same sheet of paper that your poem is on or you may use a separate sheet for your illustration.
5.  Put your 3 illustrated poems and your examples of figurative language into a booklet.  Create a cover for your booklet showing the book title and your name.
6.  Choose one poem from your book that is at least 12 lines long.  You will memorize this poem and recite it for the class.  You will need to practice so that your recitation is interesting.
Here's how your project will be graded:

Booklet with cover, showing book title and your name            10 points
Five examples of figurative language, identified                    20 points
Three poems correctly copied and illustrated                        20 points
