Background: (Source: Andrew Somers at about.com)
As far back as 6000 B.C. we know that deforestation lead to the collapse of communities in southern Israel and Jordon.

The decline of the Roman empire is thought to be due to lead poisoned foods and wine, and ancient Rome was known as a city with serious air pollution due to Roman industry.

Of course, it is the birth of the industrial age in the early 1800s that saw enormous growth in pollutants, deforestation, and declines in public health in both America and Europe.

In the 1870s we saw the formation of some of the first conservation groups such as American Forests.

The 1870s also saw the east and west coasts connected by railroad, and by 1890, the progressive era declared the end of the American Frontier.

The 20th century was full of exciting growth in technology and industry, but the price for this growth has been the depletion of our resources and increased pollution in our air and water.

In the 1930's Mohandas Gandhi said:

"The earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed"
"God forbid that India should ever take to industrialism after the manner of the West. ... If [our nation] took similar economic exploitation, it would strip the world bare like locusts,"
"This little globe of ours is not a toy of yesterday."
"We must utilize the gifts of Nature just as we choose, but in Her books, the debts are always equal to the credits."
By the 1960s, air pollution was so severe in major metropolitan cities like Los Angeles that it was presenting a serious health hazard.

In 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was born, and work began to reduce the problems of air and water pollution.

A 1990 United Nations report states that rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere will lead to global warming, and global climate change. The major source of the carbon dioxide is the burning of fossil fuels, and the deforestation of the Earth's major forests is reducing the planet's capability to process CO2 into oxygen.
