Cataloging In Publication (CIP)

CIP is not unlike the nutritional guidelines on a package of breakfast cereal. Basically, it is a block of information that contains the technical specifications; including ISBN, LC subject headings, Dewey and LC classification numbers, etc.; prepared by professional catalogers.
LC-CIP - Cataloging is prepared by the Library of Congress (LC)
PCIP - cataloging information is prepared by the publisher or his/her agent.

International Standard Book Number (ISBN)

Cataloging number for Books. It is based on an ISO International Standard that was first published in 1972 as ISO 2108. Guidelines are drafted by a subgroup of the ISO committee (ISO/TC46/SC9/WG4). The ISBN will be updated to a 13-digit on 1 Jan. 2007. See ISBN Standard Revision at ISO.
Group is 1-3 digits.
Publisher is 2-7 digits.
Title is 2-7 digits.
Total must be 10 digits for now.

International Standard Serials Number (ISSN)

A cataloging system to identify serial publications (journals, newspapers).
Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI) augments the ISSN in order to identify individual issues of serial publications, or components within those issues (such as an individual article, or the table of contents of a given issue).

CODEN

Six-character codes that identify serial and nonserial publications produced worldwide. Assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) of the American Chemical Society, but not limited to chemical publications.

Uniform Resource Names (URN)

A system for Uniform Resource Names (URNs) must be capable of supporting identifiers from existing widely-used naming systems. RFC 2288 discusses how three major bibliographic identifiers (the ISBN, ISSN and SICI) can be supported within the URN framework and the currently proposed syntax for URNs. See RFC 2288, RFC 2611

When Thomas Jefferson sold his sixty-seven hundred books "great Library" to the federal government after the British had destroyed the congressional library in Washington during the War of 1812, he had it classified in a system he had developed circa 1775-1812.
