MATHIAS MOORE CARTER'S OBIT
Mathias acquired considerable land south of Skunk River. He built a frame house at that location. It was an elegant status symbol in it's day, a notch above the prevailing log houses nearby. They were so proud of it that for years they didn't use the living room except when company came, but lived in the cellar below on a dirt floor which was sprinkled and swept daily. Daughter Roseada reminisced in later years about the move into the "big" house. Born in 1870, this would indicate a building date in the 1870's. It was torn down in 1973 because it was "too small". An all girl family didn't do much to preserve the Carter name but Carter blood courses through the veins of most old community names.
