Physical Description

Hair

Short, straight white-blond hair: slightly jagged cut, bangs fall into separate thin locks, extremely short and slightly spiky in back.

Eyes

Bright medium-green, slanted eyes are framed in long white lashes.

Physique

Stands 6'0", somewhat muscular from working with flamewhers for over 5 turns.

Appearance

A natural dark tan covers him from head to toe, including his elfin, heart-shaped face. His nose is slightly short but strong, like his highly placed cheekbones and slightly square, rounded chin. Several scars mar his body, one on his chest, his left forearm, and left cheek, all of which obtained either by a gryphon or a caer lizard.

Dress

Kalwoel likes to wear simple, close-fitting clothing, which comes in handy when he is on-duty. Flowing sleeves would get in the way, and could even become a hazard to his life, should a kicking gryphon catch the hem on a claw. For that reason, he usually wears turtle-necked shirts to conquer the drafts common down certain passages, comfortable, slim-cut trousers, and slip-on shoes. Outside he might wear a medium-thick jacket and a ski hat, since the cold does not bother him as it might others. Indeed, up North he seems to be in his element.

Personality

Additude

Kalwoel, between his brother, his studies, and his overall shy nature, has a very weak social life. More than once he has met someone who, like himself, had grown up at Ice High Aerie, but could not remember having seen him before. He has a tendency to put most of his concentration into his work, be it surgery or study, that almost everything else is shut out. However, he has that paternal instinct, whether it's natural or learned, which demands that he keep an ear out for his little brother. Around strangers and even his co-workers, he is quiet and unassuming. Something that he is not embarrassed to do is show his affection for his brother, which can be confusing to others. Some people believe that, because of his quiet maturity, Futiel is actually the young man's son.

Hobbies

none in particular.

Pets

Abyssal

Blue Abyssal, hatchling, "hatched" at
Caer Tol-eressëa.

Abyssal (pron. AHB ihs sahl), a four-year-old Blue caer lizard, is a deep sky-blue color, like the firmament around twilight. To everyone besides Kalwoel, Abyssal is about as air-headed as an air bladder and as dense as a stone. He is often very absent-minded, but like Kalwoel is actually a bit of a daydreamer. Sometimes sitting together staring off into the distance, the boy and his caer lizard have a special bond that the others simply don't comprehend.

Charrel

hatchling Black Charrel, from
Falas Weyr.

Charrel (pron. chahr ul) is a Black flitter with a nearly non-existent sheen to his hide despite frequent oiling. The five-year-old caer lizard is Futiel, Kalwoel's younger brother's favorite. Like a black kitten, Charrel is very playful and affectionate, often nuzzling the youngster's cheek. With Charrel around, Kalwoel can trust that his brother won't become bored while his back is turned.

Obsidya

hatchling Black Obsidya, from
Falas Weyr.

Obsidya (pron. ahb SEED yah) is Charrel's clutchmate, another Black but with the shine of a pure-black beetle or sliver of obsidian. Very large, Obsidya is almost as large as Stardust will one day become. Because of his dark ominous color and less than friendly demeanor with strangers, one could call him the guard dog of the group. He very protective of the weakest members, Stardust and Futiel in particular, without being affectionate in any way.

Stardust

Silver Stardust, hatchling, "hatched" at
Caer Tol-eressëa.

Stardust (pron. stahr duhst) is only a few months old. She is a Silver whose hide has a muted sheen that covers her entirety, and in certain light seems almost to glow. The "baby" of the fair, Stardust is fawned over by all of her elders, just like a youngest child. Stardust has no qualms playing this part, taking it like a spoiled but sweet child. Perhaps someday she will take the role of Queen of the Fair, but for now she is content with all the attention.

Vanilla ("Old") Bean

hatchling White Vanilla, from
Falas Weyr.

Vanilla (pron. VAAN ee yah) is an eight-and-a-half-year-old White whose hide tends toward warmer colors of pastel in the shadows (pinks, peaches, and yellows), which overall looks creamy. He is is the "old man" of the fair, sometimes crotchety or grumpy with the others. Otherwise, despite his lack of cleverness, Old Bean has a certain amount of wisdom that the others look to.

History

Kalwoel's mother, a blonde bard named Kaeniña, was never a very good one. The boy was conceived at Ice High Aerie during her travels, and somehow she was able to remember who the father was. When Kalwoel was 2 or 3 years of age, he found himself shoved into the arms of a total stranger, a blond, weathered man sharing his own bright green eyes. Fhelwol didn't know the first thing about raising children, and while he meant well, in the end he fostered off the young child to his sister Watania and the rest of the aerie children.

Kalwoel had almost forgotten about his un-motherly dam, despite her infrequent visits, having easily become accustomed to aerie life, when she brought yet another stranger into his life: a tiny little boy named Futiel.

This time, Fhelwol lost no time in handing his second-born son over to Kalwoel's aunt and foster mother, Watania. Unfortunately, the woman was getting on in her years, and did not have the time and energy to keep up with yet another small child, so Kalwoel found himself caring for a little one he hardly knew, but who needed his attentions desperately.

By this time, Kalwoel had become interested in gryphon healing, and was studying full-time with the Ice High gryphon healers. Special allowances were made for his brother, so that while Futiel was not in school, he was tagging along at Kalwoel's heels. Interestingly enough, because of this time together, the boys have become inseparable, and Futiel's fascination with the gigantic winged creatures has resulted in an honorary apprenticeship.
