Dragons are Pilgrim I Conference Champions!
Wednesday, February 7, 2001
The Duxbury wrestling team ended its dual schedule on a winning note this evening with a victory over Marshfield 37-29. Both teams entered the match with undefeated conference records. Duxbury ends the season with a 21-1-1 overall record and a 7-0 undefeated record in the Pilgrim I conference. Key wins for the Dragons were pins by Topher Bell at 135 pounds and Doug Imbrogna in the 140 pound class, and a major decision in the 171 pound class by Dan Marconi.

It was expected by most that the outcome of this match would be decided in the last few bouts, but that is not how it turned out. Kevin Donoghue of Duxbury pinned his 103 pound opponent 57 seconds into the second round. Jeff Byron fought a tough match with the top ranked 112 wrestler in Massachusetts, Barry Wilson of Marshfield, but was pinned in the last seconds of the first round. Ian McConnaughey of Duxbury won by decision at 119 pounds. Kyle McCarthy then pinned his Marshfield opponent in the second round of the 125 pound bout. Scott Klebanoff of Duxbury fended off a pin, losing a major decision to Jon Cullen of Marshfield. After the first five bouts the score was 15-10 in Duxbury's favor.

Topher Bell (130 pounds) came back from a quick takedown by Brian Treantafel of Marshfield, reversed his opponent to his back and then went on to pin Treantafel in the first round. Doug Imbrogna wrestling at 140 pounds scored a pin late in the third round. Doug's win was a huge boost for the dragons and put them ahead 27-10. In the 145 pound class, Don Perry of Duxbury wrestled a tough match and limited his opponent's win to a major decision. Josh Caldwell controlled Chris Powell of Marshfield and won by decision in the 152 pound class. Sophomore Matt Lanuto went into sudden-death overtime in his 160 pound match against Nick Giacommozzi. Lanuto took Giacommozzi down and to his back and almost pinned him, and ended the bout with a decision for Duxbury. The score was 33-14 in Duxbury's favor.

Dan Marconi took control of his 171 pound opponent in the middle of the first round and never looked back. Marconi's major decision over Dave Drosopoulous of Marshfield was sweet revenge for a loss to Drosopoulous earlier in the season. The win was also the clincher for the Duxbury win. At this point the score was 37-14 with only three matches left. It was no longer possible for Marshfield to win the match.

Elmo Roberts lost his 189 pound match by fall to Adam Hicks of Marshfield. Duxbury held back Anthony Binsfield and forfeited the 215 pound bout. Anthony suffered a cracked rib wrestling last weekend and came prepared to wrestle if he was needed. We are glad that he did not have to wrestle to help Duxbury win.

The match had a small controversy in the heavyweight bout. Kris Burgos of Duxbury
wrestled Jared Gunnerson of Marshfield. Gunnerson almost certainly outweighed Burgos by 50 pounds, but this was not the controversy. Gunnerson scored the first points in the bout by takedown, and Burgos came back with an escape making the score 2-1. In the second round Burgos reversed Gunnerson to his back and to the admittedly biased viewpoint of the Duxbury fans appeared to have pinned Gunnerson. The referee called 5 points for Burgos (2 TD, 3 NF) making the score 2-6 in Burgos' favor at the end of the second period. In the third period Gunnerson chose to be "down" and within a few seconds of starting the round was able to reverse Burgos to his back. At this point the Duxbury coaches noticed that the timekeeper had not started the clock for the period! They interrupted the referee who halted the bout to resolve the problem. Among the complaints brought up was that Duxbury's coach had stepped onto the mat to get the referee's attention. The referee decided to award 5 points ( 2 R, 3 NF) to Gunnerson of Marshfield and to add ten seconds to the match clock. The score was 7-6 in Gunnerson's favor and that is how the bout ended. Marshfield picked up another three team points for a decision and the match ended with a score of Duxbury 37, Marshfield 29.
