McCarthy
Second at 125 at All State Tournament
Monday,
February 26, 2001
Kyle McCarthy continued his tournament season this weekend
with a second place finish at the All State Tournament held
in Franklin, MA. McCarthy will advance to the New England
Championship Tournament to be held at Pinkerton Academy in
New Hampshire on March 2nd and 3rd.
McCarthy
defeated his first opponent, Matt Kelly of Lexington by decision
4-2. His next match was against Bobby Lewis of Carver, considered
by many to be the likely champion at 125 pounds. Lewis is
a two time All-State champion and three time Division III
State champion and was looking for his third All State title.
Kyle defeated Lewis for the second time this year with a solid
7-5 decision. The Globe had an article in Sunday's sports'
section titled: "Lewis
Falls to McCarthy".
Kyle's semifinal match was against Ryan Foss of Longmeadow
whom he defeated by a 3-1 decision in overtime. In the finals,
Kyle met Rob Leroux of Bridgewater-Raynham and lost a close
decision 7-6. Take a look at the overall
bracket for the All State Tournament posted by Berkshire
Wrestling.
McCarthy takes Second at 125, Lanuto Takes Fifth
at 160, and Duxbury places 12th at Division II State Tournament
Monday,
February 19, 2001
Kyle McCarthy led Duxbury to a 12th place finish at the Division
II State Tournament held in Reading. MA last weekend. With
about 50 Massachusetts Division II high schools qualifying
wrestlers for the tournament; Duxbury placed a respectable
12th.
Kyle McCarthy was Duxbury's sole wrestler that made the finals
this year. He wrestled Bryan Gammons of Natick and lost a
very close 2-1 decision. Gammons has been rated the number
one wrestler at 125 by MassWrestling
and Kyle has been number two for the last month or two.
McCarthy spent all of the third round trying to turn Gammon,
and almost had it a few times. It seems likely that these
two will meet again at the All-State Tournament and possibly
New England Tournament in the next few weeks.
Sophomore standout Matt Lanuto had an outstanding tournament,
defeating his North Attleboro opponent in the second round
of sudden death overtime to capture fifth place. Matt will
be an alternate for the All State Tournament on February 24th.
For the rest of the Duxbury wrestling team it is time to start
thinking about the next season. Several of Duxbury's qualifiers
to the D2-State Tournament came very close to placing and
are expected to be contenders next season. Ian McConnaughey
lost a close 6-4 decision to eventual finalist Sean Flemming
of Dracut. Kris Burgos lost a heartbreaker in the quarter
final consolation match in the 275 pound class. Kris was leading
7-1 and controlling the match very well, but got turned by
his much heavier opponent and was pinned. Josh Caldwell and
Kevin Donoghue each had wins at the tournament and some tough
losses.

Action
Wednesday,
January 24, 2001
For the second time in two weeks a Duxbury wrestling match
came down to the last bout of the evening and Kris Burgos
pulled out a win for Duxbury by pinning his opponent. The
Dragons were missing two regular varsity wrestlers, Matt Homesy
at 145 pounds and Anthony Binsfield at 215 pounds due to injuries

that the match against W-H would be a tough one to win. Read
