Kris Burgos of Duxbury pins his New Bedford opponent at the buzzer.

Duxbury defeats New Bedford 45-34 at Cohasset Quad Meet

Friday, January 12, 2001
The Dragons won convincingly against Sharon 58-6 and Cohasset 49-20, but the excitement of the evening was the match with New Bedford. The Duxbury High School Dragon wrestling team exceeded expectations by defeating a strong and well regarded New Bedford high school team Friday evening at Cohasset High School.

Duxbury got off to a rocky start losing the first two matches by fall and technical fall, respectively. Ian McConnaughey of Duxbury won by decision at 119 pounds. New Bedford forfeited the 125 pound match to Kyle McCarthy, then won the 130 pound match by fall. Following the 130 pound match, New Bedford was penalized one team point for a technical violation of unsportsmanlike conduct in response to a New Bedford wrestler pulling his singlet off his shoulders before clearing the mat. New Bedford then won the 135 and 140 pound matches by fall. With a score of 28-9, New Bedford looked to be running away with the match.

Matt Homsey turned the corner for Duxbury by pinning his opponent at 145 pounds. Josh Caldwell and Matt Lanuto followed with pins in rapid succession at 152 and 160 pounds. Dan Marconi also pinned at 171 pounds. New Bedford came back with a pin at 189 pounds and the match score was now 34-33 in New Bedford's favor. New Bedford forfeited the 215 pound class to Anthony Binsfield in a strategic move to position its 215 pound wrestler against Duxbury's Heavyweight. The score was then 39-34 in Duxbury's favor. To win the dual match, New Bedford needed to win the Heavyweight match with a pin.

In the first round, Kris Burgos of Duxbury was awarded a penalty point when the New Bedford wrestler fled the mat area to avoid a takedown. Both wrestlers fought a relatively defensive battle from their feet and no other points were scored in the round. Kris Burgos chose neutral to start the second round. For about a minute each wrestler attempted to gain control without success, then Burgos executed a very slick head and arm maneuver with a trip that brought the New Bedford wrestler to his back. Burgos pinned the New Bedford wrestler just at the buzzer. After consultation with the timekeeper the referee awarded the match to Burgos by pin and Duxbury won the match 45-34.
