Cowman Elwood, Alvy Franklin Elwood and James Amos Elwood.

"Joseph Cowman was the writers great grandfather, and the writer was
personally acquainted with him.He was a Methodist, a man of noble
Christian character. He was known to his friends and neighbors by the
name of 'Uncle Joe'. Not long ago I heard my uncle say that grandfather
Cowman was a peace maker; friends and neighbors would often bring their
difficulties to him for adjustment, always willing to abide by his
judgment. I also heard my father say that no better man ever lived than
Uncle Joe Cowman. He was a leader in the church and Sunday school, and in
the absence of the minister he could well fill the pulpit. He was not a
licensed preacher as we have now days, but known in those days as an
exorter; and was often called upon to officiate at funerals. He also took
an active part in township and community affairs. He was a worthy man
that anyone would do well to pattern after. Grandmother Cowman was of the
same high Christian character.
