the Civil War, in the year of 1856. They settled in the then wilderness
one mile and a half north of the Des Moines river in Marion Co., IA,
where they took land and built a long house where they resided the rest
of their lives."..."They celebrated their golden wedding November 19,
1890 (the writer being present at the occasion). He died the following
September at the age of 71 years. Mrs. Cowman remained on the home farm
with their son Preston and family until her death thirteen years later at
the age of 86" "Rebecca Cowman drew a pension, on her son Clark Rector
Cowman's was record. He enlisted September 28, 1861, Co. "E", 14th. Iowas
Infantry and was killed at the battle of Shiloh and buried there.
