How to serve

Even though we usually think about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a day where we don't have to do work, and as a day off, the best way for us to remember Martin Luther King, Jr. is to work and to serve. Here are some ways that you can serve humanity, as Martin Luther King, Jr. would have liked:

  • Selecting, purchasing, and cataloguing books representing diversity as well as biographies of people of different cultural backgrounds between Jan. 9 and Jan. 26 at Bloomington High School North.
  • Assist with painting a low-income apartment unit to expedite it being ready for occupancy on Monday, Jan. 16, from 9:00am to 4:00pm at 1007 N. Summit St.
  • Clean up trash from the west branch of Clear Creek, along Patterson Drive on Monday, Jan. 16, from 10:00 am to 2:00pm at McDoel Baptist Church (Allen and Rogers Streets).
  • Sort food and assemble emergency food bags for clients for the "Truckload Pantry" on MLK Day (the facility will be closed in Jan. 2006 for renovation). Also, volunteers are needed to work on the facility including painting, cleaning, etc on Monday, Jan.16 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at 1010 S. Walnut Street, Suite G.

  • Going here to organize your own service project.
You can also help at these places:Even if you don't do any of the things listed above, remember to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. by helping people because Martin Luther King, Jr. Day isn't a day off, it's a day on.
