As mentioned this was our first monthly meeting for 2001. The meeting was very well attended with a full table
of members (about 20+) and very nearly a shortage of chairs!
Plenty of ideas were discussed for ways in which the group would raise awareness of the Arts in Gawler and in
particular promote the profile and cause of ArtsAction.
Read on for the usual meeting summary:
- Imelda Rivers of Country Arts SA has been invited to speak at our March meeting. She will also be showing
a video. Country Arts SA is responsible for supporting arts in regional South Australia and Imelda has indicated that ArtsAction has a good chance of receiving some of
that support. All members are urged to attend the March meeting if they can.
- The Boundry dispute between the Gawler Courthouse and Police Station has been resolved. This means that
the courthouse may now be put up for sale. Although Gawler Council will not have the first option to buy, indications are that there is a good chance they will be the
first interested buyer. Council has indicated they will purchase the courthouse '...if it doesn't cost too much'. We're not sure what that means but everything sounds
promising.
- Gawler Council has a Community Arts Grant (approx $1000) currently open for applications. ArtsAction will
put in an application to fund one or more promotional stalls the group proposed to have at various local community events this year including:
- The Jacaranda Festival,
Hamley Bridge, Nov 25
- The Gawler Show
- The Village Fair, Nov 4-6
- It was decided that the group would run a stall at The Vintage Festival, Gawler, Apr 15. The stall would
include Promotional flyers and works for sale. Artists are encouraged to supply one small piece of art for sale on the stall.
- Michael Eartsch of the Bethony School House Gallery has expressed an interest in encouraging ArtsAction to
hold a winter Exhibiton the School House. This is something the group will investigate further.
- Treasurer, Julie Pastok, although not present sent in her report. Currently the group has a very healthy
bank balance and 51 memebers.
- Julie also attended a 'Funding for the Arts' Conference on behalf of our group and discoverd a number of
grants which we could put in applications for including:
- The Australia Council Arts Fund
- Visual Arts and Crafts Skills and
Development Fund
- Visual Arts Presentation Fund
- Community Cultural Development Fund
- Most of these grants are for projects and our group will access and apply for those grants which are
appropriate to our planned activities.
- Finally several members made us aware of exhibitions of their works. If you're interested in seeing some
local art then check out the following events:
- Helen Johnston & Audrey Harnet have works in the Kapunda Gallery
- Rachel Fritz (Sculptor of whimsical creations) and Karen Fiedler (Mystical textile art &
craftworks) are holding a joint Exhibition entitled "Enchantment" from March 25 at the Balaklava Courthouse Gallery.
