Entry No:

Annual General Meeting - August

August 30th, 2001

Group President, Judy Ferguson opened the meeting with a brief history of the group including how the group came into being and has evolved during its first year. She highlighted some of the groups achievements including two major exhibitions, one at the Eagle Foundry and one at the Bethany School House Gallery. She went on to mention the work done by the committee and ArtsAction members and in particular thanked those committee members in key positions for their valuable contributions.

Other points Judy mentioned included; a recent, detailed article in the Bunyip by group member Helen Callander. Two radio interviews Judy gave in the past year on Barossa Community Radio. Our next exhibition, 'The Meeting of Two Rivers', for which we have been given a $1000 grant to fund and will be held up stairs at the Gawler Visitor Centre. Featuring at that exhibition will be Guest Speaker Sharee Watkins who represents the local Kaurna people.

Treasurer's Report:

Julie submitted our Financial Statement for Last Year. Our biggest recurring expenses are; Stationery, photocopying, postage and, with our new meeting room at the Sport and Community Centre, rent.

There was a discussion about group membership fees as several members expressed concern about having joined ArtsAction as a representative of another arts group yet their other groups members weren't seen as being properly included under the ArstAction umbrella.

Judy Ferguson proposed that Arts and Craft groups with up to 50 members pay $50.00 per year for membership. Groups with greater than 50 members pay $50.00 plus an additional $10.00 for every ten group members over 50.

It was moved that this proposal be put to a vote by Colleen Gates and seconded by Chris Wilsdon. All but one member voted in favour of the proposal.

Guest Speaker: Malcolm Buckby

Malcolm provided an overview of how progress was going with ArtsAction's quest to obtain the Gawler Courthouse as a gallery space. He said that the matter was still with the Land Management Commission and the Titles Office where separate titles were in the process of being drawn up to divide the Gawler Courthouse from Gawler Police Station. He indicated that the combined properties had been valued at $260,000 and that the Courthouse would be revalued once it had a separate title.

In order to complete the process of separate titles public notification had to be given via local media as a public announcement. He wasn't sure exactly how much time was needed for notification.

He said that once the title was through the building would be offered to any Government department that wanted it to be purchased at the valuation price. Should no department want the building it would be put to public tender or local Auction.

Malcolm suggested that it would be unlikely that any government department would take on the courthouse and indicated that he would be pushing for the building to be handed over to the local community. He would also lobby that the cost of the building be divided between Local and State government.

He said he would contact Michael Armatage the following week to establish a definite time frame for getting a title for the courthouse and offering it to Government departments. He also indicated he would attempt to fast track the process as much as he was able.

Malcolm finished by reaffirming his commitment to our cause as he also recognises the potential value to the community if the Courthouse was converted into a gallery and used as a home for our local arts community.

Election of 2001-2002 Committee:

Jay Bennett was appointed as Returning Officer.

It was proposed by out going secretary Marjorie Macrae that the position of Funding research officer be created to investigate grants available to the group. This proposal was put forward by Judy and agreed upon by the group. The position of Functions organiser was also created to ensure there were always sufficient refreshments at meetings and other official events.

The new committee for 2001-2002 is as follows:

  • President: Judy Ferguson
  • Vice President: Julia Mannix
  • Secretary: David Arandle
  • Treasurer: Julie Pastok
  • Publicity Officer: Chris Wilsdon
  • Functions Organiser: Gem Congdon
  • Funding Research Officer: Joanne Hughes

Incoming Correspondence:

Malcolm Bartsch, Artistic Director of the Bethany School House Gallery sent a letter of general well wishes for our future after the conclusion of our Mid Winter Exhibition. He offered some constructive comments including:

  1. Ensure all framed artwork submitted to exhibitions is properly sealed on the back face and includes a strong hanging system.

  2. Recommended we invest in a reusable numbering system for artworks such as plastic engraved numbers. The stick on numbers we used proved difficult to remove.

  3. Suggested for future displays that we be familiar with the range of work available by creating a database of works that would be updated once per month.

This last point was discussed but it was decided at this stage the idea was impractical.

General Business:

  1. Julia Mannix brought to the groups attention several Art and Craft opportunities in the local region including; Elizabeth House has been converted into an Art Gallery by the Elizabeth Art Society. Their opening exhibition is on Saturday September 8th at 11:30am and runs for one month. Julia thought this was an excellent opportunity to see how a heritage building can be converted.

She mentioned a festival being run by the Adelaide West End Association from September 10 to October 27 entitled '2001 an Art Oddessy'.

Finally Julia mentioned a new Art & Craft market opening on the second Sunday of every month (as from October 14) at the Octagon Theatre in Elizabeth. Arts and Craft people wishing to sell their work can contact market organiser Tiffany Burge on 8284 5324.

  2. With regards to our exhibition for the Celebration of Federation Julie Hayes proposed that all Art and Craft groups represented at the exhibition be listed on promotional material and at the exhibition to emphasis the umbrella group nature of ArtsAction and to recognise the individual groups supporting us.

Bethany Exhibition Raffle:

The Raffle was drawn at this meeting with the winner of the food hamper being Jan Worden.

Meeting Closed: 9:20pm
