Christmas

About 40 people made it to the 1999 Christmas party on December 10.
The food and company were both great and a good time was had by all.
The gift exchange was as exciting as ever. Bill Tuttle managed to
take home a pair of snow skis. Think we'll see those again next year???
One for the Road
According to the FAA, many pilots still claim they are not aware
of the requirement to report motor vehicle actions (MVA) within 60 calendar
days in accordance the FAR Section 61.15. For the purposes of Section 61.15(c)
an administrative action consists of a conviction, cancellation, suspension,
or revocation of a driver license.
Examples of administrative actions include a conviction, cancellation,
suspension, or revocation of a driver license for driving with an excessive
blood alcohol level or refusal to submit to a chemical or blood test. Airmen
should be aware that the nature and duration of administrative actions
varies among the states, and that a separate notification letter is required
for each action. For example, many times an airman's driver license will
be suspended at the time of arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.
At this point the airman should submit a notification letter regarding
the driver license suspension. At a later date if the airman receives an
alcohol-related conviction, then a second notification letter is required.
This situation is ultimately viewed as one alcohol-related incident because
it arose from the same event. The report must include the following information:
· The person's name, address, date of birth, and airman certificate
number;
· The type of violation that resulted in the conviction or the
administrative action
· The date of the conviction or administrative action
· The state that holds the record of conviction or administrative
action
· A statement of whether the motor vehicle action resulted from
the same incident or arose out of the same factual circumstances related
to a previously-reported motor vehicle action.
Please mail or fax the report to: FAA, Civil
Aviation Security Division (AMC-700), P0 Box
25810, Oklahoma City, OK 73125, (fax 405 954-
4989).

Flying
Fish
Catfish flight is still running and is more popular than ever.
A recent flight to Monroeville had 9 planes and 16 people. These
folks meet and fly somewhere for lunch on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays.
If you are interested, contact Ray Hamorski. There are often empty
seats for folks without their own wings.
The Median Meridian
Many of you have heard of the new Meridian aircraft being developed
by the New Piper Aircraft. The Meridian will be a turboprop version
of the Malibu and is currently undergoing flight testing at Piper's Vero
Beach facility. One of the test pilots is Floyd Stroup of Chapter
108. At the January, 2000 meeting, Floyd gave a detailed presentation
on a recent mishap that occurred during flight testing.
The test flight called for Floyd to intentionally run the aircraft fuel
tanks dry to determine the amount of unusable fuel in straight and level
flight. The plan was to then switch to a plastic auxilary fuel tank.
However, when the cabin was pressurized, the plastic auxilary fuel tank
was crushed and drained its fuel out the overflow vent. The test
pilots were unaware of this at the time. When the main tank ran dry,
there wasn't enough fuel to reach an airport.
Floyd chose instead to make a dead-stick landing on I-95. He chose
a gap in traffic and landed without hitting any cars. However, the
gear had failed to lock and gradually folded back up as the plane rolled
out. The Meridian ended up on its belly in the median of I-95.
The plane was later loaded onto a truck and hauled back to the airport.
Although it made a fascinating story, Floyd doesn't plan on landing on
any other interstate highways any time soon.
