SERFI (Southeast Regional Fly-in) 1998

Once again SERFI was held in Evergreen, AL on October 9-11.  The weather was cool but absolutely beautiful.  Not a cloud in the sky during the entire fly-in.  This was the first year that the fly-in has begun on Friday and the extra day allowed more flexibility for the attendees.  Many people arrived Thursday night and departed on Saturday, but many others stayed through Sunday evening.

Pancake Breakfast

At least a dozen chapter members made the flight to Evergreen and many of them camped behind the main hangar on Friday and Saturday nights.  The nights were cold, but the friendships were warm.  The chapter members rose at 5 a.m. each morning to prepare breakfast for over 300 people.  Hot coffee, pancakes, and sausage were a great way to start the day.

The pancake breakfast made a profit of almost $700 and the fly-in as a whole made more than $15,000.  This was the first year that the fly-in has been able to finance itself without outside help.  The bank accounts are also looking good for next year.

Airshow and Aircraft

Approximately 300 aircraft participated in the fly-in.  These aircraft included everything from gyrocopters and ultralights to Steamans and a B-25.  The Navion society invited their members to participate in the fly-in and over a dozen Navions were in attendance.  The fly-in also featured an airshow on Saturday afternoon.  Several outstanding performances by Southeastern pilots demonstrated the capabilities of a Starduster, a Yak-52, a Pitts, a Glassair, and a formation of Navions.

Awards Banquet

Over 226 tickets were sold for the awards banquet.  The beautiful Jenny replica shown at right was crowned Grand Champion.  The speaker for the banquet was Frank Sperandeo III.  Mr Sperandeo is a physics professor from the University of Arkansas who has restored a Piper Pacer.  His Pacer, Miss Pearl, has over 90 FAA-approved modifications.
