FOOD: The best source for meals is the Salvation Army (can be rather good too), also local homeless shelters often serve meals (sometimes even mid-day meals). Generally homeless shelters only serve breakfast if you have stayed the previous night. Most areas have "food banks" where you can get free food, however, you may have to do this through local churches. Many churches also provide meals during the day. Don't forget state agencies which have "food stamp" programs which you can apply for.
NOTE: While there are many different Welfare Type Benefits available to folks who are down on their luck, if you are a fleeing felon or suspected felon, some states are cross-checking their welfare files with the FBI National Crime Information Center files.
