Question:
I want my child to take lessons. How do I go about
that?
Answer:
Great opportunity here, especially in this day of
technology! Bellow is offered two solutions:
- Check
out the "traditional way of going about this. Basically a
real live person you meet with once a week for a half
hour or so. I will be posting a list of area music
teachers here soon. For now call me for names and
numbers.
- The
high tech way - First you must have Real Player installed
for this Video Lesson to work.
- So....
lets go get that -

- Now
let's take an interactive, private video lesson on the
web.
When
you and Mr. Shimmons feels that you are ready to join class
during the school day we will do so at an appropriate time
in the school year - Like at a semester or MAYBE a marking
period
Question:
I have a student that is interested in starting band but
they did not sign up when they were in 5th grade. How do
they join?
Answer:
This question comes up several times a year at least. This
is a possibility for any student. What needs to happen is as
follows:
- Set
up an appointment with Mr. Shimmons to be fitted to an
instrument that would work for you.
- Rent
an instrument - or borrow one from someone you
know.
- Take
private lessons to catch up to where other students your
own age are.
- When
you and Mr. Shimmons feels that you are ready to join
class during the school day we will do so at an
appropriate time in the school year - Like at a semester
or MAYBE a marking period.
Question:
How do I best help my child be successful in this musical
journey they are on?
Answer:
The most important item is to set up a regular practice
schedule. Daily practice and hard work is vital to a child
succeeding in this endeavor.
Show
your student that you support them through a variety of
methods. The best is to enjoy this experience with them
as a part of the Band Boosters. Give them every
opportunity to perform for you and others. The chance to
play for next door neighbors, grandparents, Mom and Dad
as well as any one that will listen is the best morale
booster you can find.
Question:
How do we maintain our students instrument?
Answer:
Soon we will have a page here on our web site that will
detail the basics of taking care of each instrument. The
first thing is to make sure that your child understands how
delicate their instrument is. Make sure they wipe brass
instruments off and run a cloth through woodwind
instruments. Do not keep reeds on mouthpieces, this results
in all sorts of need breeds of bacteria. See the supplies
page for cleaning kits and reed holders.
