PHILOSOPHY RATIONALE:

Spanish Literature Advanced Placement this course is designed to continue the application and appreciation of the Spanish language and its culture through reading and analysis of the literary selections of the Spanish and Hispanic American authors. Students critique orally and in writing the representative works of prose, poetry, and drama. Intensive work in grammar and vocabulary will be required in order to help students prepare for College Board achievement and placement. The course is comparable in difficulty and content to an advanced-level college class in Spanish composition and conversation.  Students enrolled in this course are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Test in Spanish Literature in May.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Advanced Placement Spanish Literature course is intended to be the equivalent of a third-year Introduction to Literature in Spanish, covering selected works from the literatures of Spain and Latin America from the Medieval and Golden Ages to the 20th Century. Because students read and analyze literature orally and in writing, the language proficiency reached by the end of the Advanced Placement course is generally equivalent to that of college students who have completed a fifth or sixth semester of Spanish in composition, conversation, and grammar as well.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand a lecture in Spanish and participate actively in discussions on literary topics in Spanish.
  • Analyze critically the form and content of literary works (including poetry) orally and in writing using appropriate terminology.
  • Compare and contrast, orally and in writing, the way in which two or more authors from the required reading list treat a given theme and/or topic.
  • To prepare students desiring to the Advanced Placement Examination.
  • To prepare college bound students to perform successfully on the college level.
