About Hongdae

Hongdae originally means 'Hong-ik University', but now this term is commonly used to refer the whole area including the shops and streets around Hong-ik Univ. Hongdae is well known for its unique atmosphere. And that's why Hongdae now has become one of the most popular place where the yougsters hang around. Hongik University has one of the most famous art departments in Korea. It follows that the coffee shops and restaurants near the university should also be artsy. The area has a Western atmosphere, without being an American ghetto like Itaewon. Many new music types get their first playings in Korea in these local clubs. Many of the restaurants and clubs have original artwork inside by college artists. Usually the clubs opens at 7pm to 4am on weekdays and 7pm to 6am on weekends. And the entrance fees are 5000 won on the weekdays and 10000 at weekends and the clubdays. This fee includes one beverage.



Matmata



Matmata is one of my favorite place. It's always crowded with people even in the weekdays and it's known as one of the most popular place among the clubs. They introduce various kinds of music which would be familiar to the people who comes for the first time.Matamata was first madein 1997 and it has a short history but it's sure that almost every club mania might have been here. Matmata is a underground city which come out in the movie, and also it is a city in Tunisia, Afrika. 7 DJs takes turns by time and they play HIPHOP, HOUSE TRANCE HARDCORE. Usually,people starts to gather after 9p.m.




M.I



MI is well known as the place where DJ UNCLE performs. He's a kind of a pioneer who'd brought techno to Korea and he's also the owner of MI. This place had opened at 1996 and MI is abbreviation of music intelligence. As the owner is a DJ himself he arranges many great DJ concerts and he was the one who started the "club day". At Mi you can enjoy various kinds of music Hiphop, house, travce,2-steps, and etc.



NB




NB is the biggest clubs among the other clubs in Hongdae and is well known as a hiphop club. It became more famous after Yang Hyun-suk took over the club. You can here different style of music from 2 different rooms and DJ Adang, DJ Bandi are the main DJs. Because this place is pretty large is held a lot of events and it is used for many as a set of commercials because of the cybertical interior. All of the staff memebers are really kind and if you're not familiar with that kind of atmosphere you can just sit at the bar and watch others.




JOKER RED




At 1995 when Joker Red first opened it played various kinds of music likeRock, Soul, Acid & Funky,Jazz, Hiphop and from 1996 they tried to introduce and contributed a lot to influx the clun culture. When you first open the front door, you can see the large stage and neo color tables and really goreous red lights. You can enjoy house and trence music excepy on Wednesday the Hiphop day.

Varong C




The name of this club makes people wonder. What means Varong C? They say that this name was originated from the name of the head of one religous sect. Guru




The way "guru" sounds makes you feel very cozy and comfortable. This is the case where the image of the name is reflected to the interior of the club. The atmosphere here feels so cozy, snug, and makes people to groove. Usually the clubs feels very cold and sharp but this place is exceptional. They usually play a house, acid jazz and punky sound.
