Kiomati

"Let's take a break," Tanya suggested wearily. "We've been at this all day."
"Oh," Chale complained, "I was starting to get the hang of it." They both took a seat on the couch. Chale was amazed at how distant Tanya had been all day. Even the orb on her staff had lost it's usual radiance. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, fine," she answered shortly.
"Okay. So. . ." He took a moment, trying to think of how to break the awkward silence. "What brings you here? Why did you leave home?"
"I just needed a little away-from-home experience and, um. . . yeah." She remained distant, her eyes never leaving the the window and staring unblinkingly into the sky. It was the same thing she had told everyone else who had asked.
"You must have had a nice childhood, huh? My parents were a little disappointed in me when I didn't pick up this whole mage thing as fast as they would have liked. But since you're good at this, then you must have had an easier time."
My childhood, Tanya mused. He should mention that today of all days. Her mind wandered to Kiomati, her home world. Just after her birth a revolution had broken out and overturned the rule of the Kilomalano, the magic-wielding tyrants of Kiomati. Her parents thereafter decreed that anyone showing even a glimmer of magic would be killed. There could be no exceptions, lest the Kilomalano returned.
Growing up, Tanya had seen her parents aid in the merciless slaughter of men, women and children suspected of magic. She knew when she discovered her powers at six, not to tell a soul and not to use them.
Unfortunately she was intrigued by her powers and set out to teach herself in secret. She was at an advantage for her parents were almost always out and she had heard so many tales of the Kilomalano that she knew everything there was to know about them.
She began with creating her staff. Her book taken from the Kilomalano's former residence gave through instruction on how to construct a staff of power that even a child like her could follow. She constructed the main part and dove for the crystal orb to be situated on top. This staff would increase her power and control but, as she found out after she had finished it and begun working with it, whatever injuries occured to the staff, happened to her. She read further and found that if she were sperated from her staff for more than a week she would become increibly weak and the crystal orb being broken would mean her death.
After years of perfecting her control, it failed her. Tanya had been tired and overestimated the energy she would need for a spell. It ended in her blowing a hole in the wall of her room. She had barely recovered when her father burst into the room in a rage.
"You're out of the family!" her father roared. "No one can bring back the rule of the Kilomalano! No exceptions!" He calmed down slightly and his voice went quiet. "I'll give you a day before the whole planet knows and the hunt begins."
Tanya was scared out of wits and was uncertain if she had heard right. She gathered her wits after a moment, knowing very well he would do it. She grabbed her staff, which was connected to her very life and not just a tool for her magic, and jumped out the hole n the wall, running into the forest once her feet hit the ground.
"No matter where you run we will find you!" her father yelled ominously into the forest. "We will not let your kind survive!"
That had been four years ago to the day. I wonder if they're still after me, she thought. I can never go back to find out.
"Tanya, are you sure you're okay?" Chale asked again.
"Huh? Yeah," she replies softly. "Fine. Let's get back to work."
"Aren't you going to tell me what it was like for you as a kid?" he asked.
"No," Tanya replied.I haven't told anyone yet, I'm not about to start now.
Chale had heard her last thought, but thought better than to tell her or ask her what she had meant for now. This was probably not the time to go digging up her past.
