"How to" Install Plastic Lumber Decking

1x6 t&g (tongue & groove) decking - Use # 7- 21/4" long "star" or "square" drive Stainless Steel screws. Joist span should not exceed 12". Drive screws thru the tongue side of 1x6 t&g decking at 45 degrees into each joist (as shown). Design deck on slight slope to drain rain. (gap butted ends of boards per ambient temperature guideline)

 

5/4 x6 and 5/4 x8 Decking - Use #8- 21/2" long "star" or "square" drive SS screws. Joist span should not exceed 16". Space decking 1/8" - 1/4" side-to-side for drainage. Stagger adjacent decking butt joints. Drive two screws into each joist, about 1/8" below surface. Hammer over erupted plastic to plug and smooth over hole.(gap butted ends of boards per ambient temperature guideline)

2x6 Decking and stair treads - Use # 10 - 3" long "star" or "square" drive SS screws. Joist span should not exceed 24". Predrill board with a 5/32" drill and drive two # 10 - 3" screws through the 2x6 decking into each joist. (gap butted ends of boards per ambient temperature guideline)

 

Note !!! decking butt gaps will increase on cold days, but will reduce on hotter spring and summer days.
