Like a Weyrling..

The sun hadn't quite peeked over the skyline yet, but a blue weyrling was already getting a scrub from his rider on the lakeshore.

KulerthYou missed a spot. Kulerth said, turning his head to look.

"I did not!" Drikara said, her tone one of disbelief and mock indignance.

Did so! It's still itchy. The blue replied. Drikara stopped scrubbing, her hands on Kulerth's hide. "Ok, show me." She said.

Kulerth twisted his long neck and turned his head to look at the spot. Drikara's eyes grew unfocused as she looked through her dragon's eyes. Sure enough, there was still mud caked between his wingshoulders from that mudfight with Onaleth last evening.

Drikara blinked, vision returning to her eyes. "Ok, I see Kulerth. We'ven't gotten that far yet. I'll get it."

Drikara appeared for breakfast, smiling. Sy'n had saved her a place at the table as usual. Onaleth... please tell Kulerth to tell Drikara...

Onaleth says Sy'n says they had a good time last night. the blue relayed. Drikara beamed. Pass back 'I'm glad - so did I. We'll have to do it again.'

Now it was Sy'n's turn to grin. It was common for the weyrlings to pass messages via their dragons while they waited quietly for the meal to begin.

Onaleth says the WeyrlingMaster looked funny this morning. The blue said to his rider.

DrikaraFunny how? Drikara replied, raising an eyebrow slightly.

Oddly pleased, maybe? came the dragon's reply.

Finally the meal began. Drikara really did prefer formal sit-down breakfasts over the grab-and-go type.

"So what's this about the WeyrlingMaster looking funny?" J'rin asked from down the table.

"Yeah! What's the deal?" another asked.

"Onaleth and I saw the WeyrlingMaster and his dragon checking out the sky this morning." Sy'n siad, "They looked oddly pleased. I think..." he paused for effect, but someone cut in with a chuckle.

"I've got you beat, Sy'n. I don't think. I know." All eyes were on the stoic W'ren. They buzzed with excitement.

"Well tell us!" Someone said.

W'ren calmly went back to eating, and all the other weyrlings continued to pester him. Finally he spoke. "Have you got your riding straps done?" he asked cryptically. That was the undoing for the weyrlings, but they couldn't get a word more about it from W'ren... or about how he knew.

After the meal came an announcement: " Weyrlings and their dragons are to be at the training field in half a candlemark... and don't forget your riding straps."

The four from East Rock Territory were among the first to arrive. Maiahn sat by working on something as she watched.

The WeyrlingMaster appeared, a grin on his face. "Today," he said, "you learn to ride these beasts of yours."

What a day!
