Giini's candidacy

Giini hadn’t been at the Healing Den long when she began to examine the local plant life. Some of the plants were the same, only smaller, than the ones growing in the warmer Southern climate.

A garden of greenery slowly began to accumulate in the sunny places in and near Giini’s candidate room. No one bothered her plants, or tried to stop her from doing it – nor did it keep them from away as it had at Kielac. Giini felt like Baeris was actually encouraging her.

When hatching day came, Giini was attempting to transplant part of a mature fern she’d dug up nearly a half day’s walk from the den. She hadn’t walked there – one of the dragonriders was happy to take her there – she was just a touch bored, and did her sweep while Giini dug. The girl washed the majority of the soil from her hands and arms, and hurried to the sands. A large egg hatched, spilling out not one, but two green dragons, one light and one dark. The lighter one came to Giini. Her name was Palith.

In the days that followed, Palith did her best to help with Giini’s plants. One day, Giini walked into her (now larger) weyr to find that Palith had eaten nearly half of a large mint plant. She’d yelled when she saw the plant’s ragged condition, but was far more concerned with whether or not the herb would make her dragon sick.

Palith

You eat it. Palith said, Why can’t I?

"Because I don’t know if it will make you sick, Palith!" Giini said, frantic. "How do you feel?"

Fine. It makes my mouth cold when I blow. Palith said, demonstrating. Her minty breath rushed out, rippling the fabric of Giini’s tunic.

"Oh Palith – you scared me – don’t eat any more plants without asking me first. And be sure to tell me if the mint makes you feel sick." Giini hugged her dragon. "Stay here – I have to go ask Baeris. And don’t eat anything,"
I won’t.
