Hull City gained an absolutely vital point in their play-off chase at Home Park after trailing for most of the match. Paul Mcgregor put the home side ahead after only 3 minutes, but a bizzare own goal 5 minutes from time pulled the Tigers level. Ian Goodison and Paul Musselwhite were still struggling with injuries, so did not make the squad.Bracey deputized for Mussy, and Gary Brabin continued in defence. Also, Rodney Rowe and John Eyre were replaced by Theodore Whitmore and Steve Swales as manager Brain Little started with a 4-5-1 formation, leaving Kevin Francis up front on his own. Disaster struck early as a defensive mistake let Plymouth in. Justin Whittle and gary Brabin each left a through ball to each other, and allowed Paul Mcgregor to get in between them, latch on to the ball, and hammer it home from inside the area. And only a minute later Lee Bracey had to make a good save as the Greens put on the pressure. But City started to come in to the game, and the rest of the half was played out fairly evenly. Steve Swales snatched at a good opening shortly after the early goal, but clear cut chances were not in abundance for either side. At half time, Whitmore was replaced by Rowe. The Tigers reverted to their familiar 4-4-2 and started to attack more. They were the slightly better team in the second half, as the home crowd got frustrated with the referee's decisions against them. City, meanwhile, had a few spells of pressure. They had a few corners in fairly quick succession, and among other chances, Gary Brabin fired in to the side netting. Steve Swales made way for Eyre as Brain Little went for broke with a bold 4-3-3 formation. And it paid off as an equaliser came as the match drew to it's conclusion. John Eyre raced through on the right, half crossed/shot over the advancing Larrieu, but it appeared the danger was saved for Plymouth as Paul Wotton was back in time to clear off the line. However, he did not notice Stuart Elliott racing back for the same reason, and although he got to the ball first, he hit it straight at Elliott, and it went in to the empty net. No more action apart from late Plymouth substitutions and a well deserved draw for City. This point leaves us in the play-offs, in 7th place. |
