Chances are a lot of you have never played the orginal Metroid, and I kind of feel sorry for you. It's a pretty damn good game, that started the series that a lot of us love now. The first thing you'll notice when you play Metroid, is that it is also a very difficult game compared to the newer episodes. That is mainly because Samus starts off with only 30 energy units, unlike all the new games that start you with 99. You'll also notice that you have no map, which is cool because you really have to explore on your own to get around, but bad beacuse it is very easy to get lost or go TOO far off the route before you're ready. It is one of the things that I do not like about Metroid, without the map I feel overwelmed. Now that is just a tincy bit whiny, but I'm sure a full auto map would've been impossible on the NES, you get either all the map or none of it.
But this is where it all began and you have to respect that, after playing the more recent versions of Metroid, you realize what an amazing feat it must of been to pull off a game like this on the NES. Sure you couldn't duck, or aim in any direction except, left and right, and sure PASSWORDS where as annoying as hell, but it sure has held up hasn't it? I hope that now with Prime's inclusion of the original, more people will discover Metroid's roots. Metroid may not be my favorite of the Metroid series, but it sure was ahead of it's time!
