Metroid 2 is the most obscure of the Metroids I think. Not as many people played this one, myself I've only played an actual cartridge twice(I've recently finished the ROM version). But other than the fact it is on the Gameboy, it is still a Metroid game, and a pretty good one at that. The wierdest thing about Metroid 2 is the mission Samus has, to distroy all the Metroids, there is a counter at the bottom of the screen and every last one of the metroids must be destroyed to complete the game. Metroid 2 progressed the Metroid gameplay in a few unqiue ways, first save points, second with cool new powerups. Mostly in the form of the Morphball, the Spider Ball which is a sticky mode of the Morphball that allows Samus to roll up walls and across celings. The other is the spring ball, which allows Samus to jump in ball form with out using bombs.
If there was anything bad to say about Metroid 2 it would have to be the fact that of all the Metroid games the control isn't as sharp as the other games in the series. Metroid 2 also doesn't have any map, and the fact that EVERY chamber looks the same doesn't help either. Metroid 2 was a very small step in the metroid series, and is my least favorite, mostly because it is on Gameboy(I just can't stand the monocrome of the old GB). Metroid 2 is a good game that Metroid fans should play, just to help fill out the series, espcially fans who started with Super Metroid or even the 2 new games that have recently come out.
