RACE 5 Turn 1 Action. (nice shot taken by Tom Parker)
I've gained some more confidence on the YSR. So far only one real crash and a few off-road excursions during Saturday Practice (Knock on wood.) I scared myself silly today by sliding the back end exiting the corkscrew during a race. I pulled an "unintentional" backing the rear into a turn a la Nicky Haden (AMA phenom) style.
What really happend? My back wheel washed out from underneath me because I gassed it too soon while fully leaned over. Thinking back all the weight was on the front of the bike. The corkscrew is similar to Laguna Seca's. At Prarie City, you start up steep hill climb and you must make a hard left down hill (brake, which loads the front end suspension) an tight right hander to a tight left hander. Since, most of the weight was on the front of the bike it's no wonder why I spun the back wheel so easily. I learned an important lesson of good throttle control today.
What saved me was my right knee puck. These bikes are so small and light that I kept the bike from falling on its' side by using my right knee and sucessfully setting the rear tire down to make the tight right hander. It was scarry because I had 3 guys tailing closely behind me. After the race they told me they were afraid to pass me because I was all over the track. |
