Alice is the modern English form of Adelaide. Adelaide contracted to Adelais to Adeliz to Aliz to Alice. See Adelaide for more information.

History:
Alice appears only rarely before the 12th century, but popular afterwards (although by the 17th century it was considered “rustic” and old-fashioned). It was revived and popularized in the 19th century by the popular nonsense novel Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
