Aylwin, like its brother name Elwin, comes from an Old English name with several possible sources:
1. It could from Aelfwine, meaning “Elf Friend” from “aelf” (elf) and “wine” (friend).

2. It could from Aethelwine meaning “Noble Friend” from “aethel” (elf) and “wine” (friend).


History:
Aylwin was an Old English name that declined and disappeared after the Norman Conquest in the 12th century.

Aylwin was briefly revived after the 1898 novel Aylwin by Theodore Watts-Dunton. It never became as common as Elwin, and certainly never reached the heights of Alvin.
