"San Juan boys bounce back with victory over Encina"
High School Basketball
By Quwan Spears, Bee Staff Writer...Saturday, February 5, 2005

The San Juan High School boys basketball team continued to roll Friday night. The Spartans outworked the visiting Encina 73-60 in a battle for first in the Golden Empire League.

The Spartans (18-3, 8-1) were in control from the start. Five players scored in double figures, led by forward Brandon Stewart's geme-high 20 points.

"We played hard and with a lot of intensity, and I think that was the key to the game," said Stewart, whose team has won nine of its last 10 gemes.

The Spartans' aggressive play, and a three-point exhibition helped coach Eric Wohlenberg's team rebound from Wednesday's 44-41 loss to Capital Christian.

Friday, the Spartans came out blazing, and finished with seven three-point baskets in 13 attempts.

Senior guard Nate Willis scored six of his 13 points from three-point range, Verrod Chapman had 11 and Flanders Feenstra and Tamas Borok scored 10 each.
"Capital Christian really handed it to us," Wohlenberg said, "But I guess sometimes good things come from a loss, and that proved to be the case in this game. Encina is very athletic, and they make you attack the rim. So we had to play with a lot of energy and hustle to beat them."

San Juan led by as many as 12 in the first half and 13 in the second. Encina (15-5, 6-2) made runs in each half, drawing as close as eight points. But the Spartans found ways to prevent the Bulldogs from pulling any closer.

They accomplished the task with second efforts. San Juan beat Encina for loose balls and piled up points in the key on offensive rebounds.

At the close of the second quarter, Stewart missed on a three-point attempt, rebounded his shot and scored on a layup just before the buzzer. That gave the Spartans a 36-29 lead at halftime.

San Juan continued to outhustle the Bulldogs in the second half.

Encina coach Brian Mitchell held a lengthy meeting with his players following the game. Neither he nor his players were available for comment.

Thomas Henderson led Encina with 13 points. Phillip Johnson scored 12, and Andre Mayo 10 for the Bulldogs, who were swept by the Spartans this season.

The Spartans' next goal is to win the GEL. They lead Encina by 1 1/2 games. San Juan has three games to play, Encina four.

"It's not going to be easy," Wohlenberg said, "We still have some tough games ahead. But if we continue to play like we did tonight, we have a good chance."

Attitudes That Build Winners:
"Sports psychologists have identified the eleven mental attitudes directly related to success in competitive sports."

Drive~ provides the desire that carries an athlete to success. Dedicated athletes have a strong desire to improve, to compete and to win. No One gets to be best without a burning desire to be the best.
Agressiveness~ Winners make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen. They take charge, force action, and produce results. They assert themselves strongly, make their presence felt. They thrive on competition.
Determination~makes winners. The refusal to quit or accept defeat; the persistence to try and try and try again; the willingness to practice long and hard. Determined athletes are relentless in their efforts to improve and to win.
Responsibility~Winners accept total responsibility for their actions. They recognize their own mistakes and the need for change and improvement. They admit errors and will not blame others or make excuses.
Leadership~Winners tend to enjoy the role of leader. When leadership is needed, they step forward and take charge. They are dynamic prople who like to influence others and take control of situations.
Self-Confidence~builds winners. Winners have confidence in their abilities and can act decisively. They believe they can successfully meet challenges, handle unexpected situations. They never doubt their own ability.
Emotional Control~Successful athletes can handle the pressures of competitive sports. They stay cool, adjust quickly, and are not upset by bad breaks or bad calls. They deliver top performance regardless of the circumstances.
Mental Toughness~is a big factor in athletic success. Winners can accept strong criticism and rigorous training from a demanding coach. They recover quickly from setbacks, don't fall apart when the going gets rough.
Coachability~Winners respect the coach and the coaching process. They know that coaching is important to their development and progress as an athlete. They are reseptive to the coach's advice and follow it.
Concientiousness~Winners have high standard of character. They have a deep sense of obligation, and know a team must have discipline to be successful. They put the welfare of the team first, don't bend rules or regulation to suit themselves.
Trust~Winners are believers. They accept people at face value, and know that mutual trust is a major factor in building team morale and unity. Trusting athletes communicate and cooperate better with their teammates and coach.
