Many important things have been acheived since I entered the Univesity, but among all of them I can't leave unmentioned everything I learned when working on Dfd. It was a team-work. Besides contructing a powerful tool for the study of basic algorithms, I learned much about group work, I learned writing, I learned reading and I had the opportunity to represent my university in several national events and in the 4th Iberoamerican Congress of Educational Informatics in Brasilia (Brasil), in 1998. All of that experience made a great contribution to my academic and personal life. Dfd is a flowchart editor and interpreter. The WYSIWYR label is due to Nelson Castillo, one of the authors, and it stands for "what you see is what you run". One can easily build, run and debug algorithms represented with flowcharts. Also it's possible to save/open them to/from hard disk and send them to the printer. Flowchart seems to be a good method for learning in basic levels, but as algorithms get more complicated it becomes anoying to work with images instead of text, because of problems with: space administration, correct drawing and absence of debugging tools. Dfd's graphic interface is an attemp to solve these problems without wasting the power of flowcharts. It's meant to be used for beginners, although one can use it for building complex algorithms, even using recurrent calls. It currently runs under Windows. We still don't know of similar projects, if you do please e-mail us. We'd like to continue developing Dfd, although we haven't worked on it for a long time. We're thinking of:
We'd like Dfd to be free software under the GNU General Public License, but we can't because it depends on proprietary libraries. If you want to help us write code or have any comments, you can either e-mail me or join the Dfd mailing list. We invite you to subscribe and help us with your suggestions and comments.
