Dominica's Exotic Birds
Dominica is home to two parrots found nowhere else. The Imperial (Amazona
imperialis) - known loccally as the Sisserou - is Dominica's national bird. The
Red-necked or Jaco/parrot (Amazona arausiaca) is smaller that the Imperial
and can be found at lower elevations than the Imperial.
Dominica is also home to a wide variety of tropical wildlife. It has a relatively
varied fauna and hosts the most diverse assemblage of wildlife in the smaller
Eastern Caribbean islands. To date, 172 species of birds have been recorded
including two endemic and endangered species of parrot-the Sisserou (Dominica's
national bird) and the Red-necked Parrot.
