Natural Beauty of Dominica
Dominica is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean". Dominica is a
mountainous island of of volcanic origin, only 290 square miles. Eighty percent
of the island has 2,500 mm or more of rainfall each year, with up to 10,000 mm
(10 metres) in the central mountains. Over two thirds of Dominica is covered
by primary tropical rainforests, with more than 1,200 species of flowering
plants including 74 species of orchids and 200 ferns and up to 60 species of
trees per hectare. It boasts a variety of natural attractions including 365
rivers and streams, waterfalls, hot sulfur springs, a boiling lake and four cold
freshwater lakes. The island's high range of altitude, coupled with its rainfall,
has given rise to a wide variety of vegetation. Twenty-two endemic species of
plants have been identified, one being the bwa kwaib, officially designated as
the island's national flower.
