Taba

Taba, which lies right on the Egyptian- Israeli border, was only recently returned to Egyptian control in 1989. It was the last part of Sinai to be returned. There’s a luxury five star hotel there, with all its facilities, be it diving, jet ski, dining, drinking, dancing and to

top it all off a casino. Other than the Taba Hilton Hotel there is nothing to Taba really. Unless you plan to stay there, there is absolutely no need to go. You can cross over to the Israeli city of Eilat from there, and hundreds of Israelis enter Sinai from that border each day. Buses from Cairo to Taba run on a daily basis, and back. Air Sinai flies twice a week from Cairo to El Naqb airport which is just 30 km from Taba.

Pharaoh’s Island

Seven kilometers before reaching Taba you’ll find an island wit a castle on it to your right. This is the Pharaoh’s Island or Geziret Phara’un in Arabic. On it is the fortress of Salah El-Din, which was built during the crusades in 12th Century. It is nice to spend a few hours

there. From the island you can see the port city of Aqaba in Jordan, and the Hilton Hotel in Taba. The boat ride to the island takes just a few minutes and costs 11 LE, and the entry cost is only 8 LE (half for students). Please note that the island is also known as the Salah El-Din Island
