Ferris Bueller's Day Off
What would you do if you skipped school one day?  This is a movie about a boy skipping school and the adventures he has in Chicago with his best friend, his best girl, and a 1961 Ferrari 250GT.  With Matthew Broderick as Ferris.  Look for cameos by Charlie Sheen and Ben Stein.
WHY THIS MOVIE MATTERED THEN:  Didn't you wish you were Ferris Bueller?  Here's a kid who has everything go his way and everything always works out in the end.  Oh, if only life were really like that.
WHY IT MATTERS NOW:  Any movie that features Ben Stein has got to be good. Plus, this is the other John Hughes movie (see below) that holds up.
QUOTABLE QUOTE:  "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

The Princess Bride

Sixteen Candles
The classic story of a boy, a girl, and a geek.  Molly Ringwald plays Samantha, a high school sophomore whose family forgets her Sweet Sixteen.  With Michael Schoeffling as Jake, the boy of her dreams and Anthony Michael Hall as Farmer Ted, the geekiest freshman that ever lived.  Features John Cusack in an early role (he's going to come up alot).
WHY THIS MOVIE MATTERED THEN:  The first movie that meant something to me personally.  This movie made me cry the first time I saw it.   I was fifteen when it came out and it seemed the story of my life (well, except the happy ending, which is why it made me cry).  Here was a regular girl (like me), whose parents had forgotten her birthday (actually happened to me), being pursued by someone they didn't want (I know everybody's been in that situation), pining for someone they could never have.  Story of my life (at that time).
WHY IT MATTERS NOW:  This movie is damn funny.  Plus, out of all the teenage movies that John Hughes did in the Eighties, I think this one holds up the best (along with one other).
QUOTABLE QUOTE:   "No more yanky my wanky. The Donger need food."

The Sure Thing
