Spring

Easter is the most important festival in spring. In eastern Finland Orthodox Christianity has influenced it. Easter dishes, such as pasha, kulitsa and papa, are good examples of this influence. Finland’s two Orthodox monasteries, Valamo and Lintula, are located in Heinävesi.

In eastern Finland children used to strike adults lightly with decorated willow-branches, wishing good luck rhymes. Today this custom has spread to the whole of Finland and the adults often give children sweets or money. Another spring festival is May Day, celebrated on the first of May. Then people fry doughnuts and drink sima, a homemade sparkling lemon drink.
