Galway Rovers where formed in 1937, but it wasn't until forty years later that they decided to come up from the junior ranks and join the National League of Ireland. The Tribesmen were called Galway Rovers until they changed their name in 1981 to Galway Utd. The club had little success in terms of silver, but the main achievement of the club was that they managed to stay in the top flight surviving on local youngsters to make a team. It was in the 1985/86 season that Galway Utd had their best season, the club managed to finish the season in second place which was a great achievement for such a small club, they competed in Europe the following season against Lyngby and the Tribesmen were unlucky to go down by a single goal in both legs. Galways only major silverwear in senior football came when they won the FAI Senior Challenge Cup in 1991 and subsequently qualified for the Cup Winners Cup. The team unfortunately went out at the first hurdle again, this time to Odense, who won on a 7-0 scoreline. In the league side of things the club were a premier division team from their entrance to the senior ranks up until they were relegated in 1992, they bounced straight back up and although the club has tasted first division football agin in more recent years, they are stronger for the experience. They have managed to win the First Division in 1992 and 1996, along with the League Cup in '86 and '92. The club have gone through tough times, but with the arrival of Don O' Riordan the club is on the up with a strong young local squad mixed with experienced Internationals like Eric Lavine. Galway have been playing in Terryland park for all but one season when they played in Crowley Park because of redevelopements. The club, recently, has been seen as one of the more progressive and Terryland Park is a ground that would match up, if not surpass most other grounds in the league. |
