Sligo Rovers F.C. was founded in 1928 and although a junior side had previously competed under the name, they had no affiliation with teh club we know today. The team came about as an amalgamation of two clubs, Sligo Town and Sligo Blues. The club spent its first years in the junior ranks, they had an immediate impression on the Junior competitions and lifted the IFA (Irish Free State) Junior Cup, one of the most prestigious in the junior ranks, this was followed by the Cannaught Junior Cup in 1930. The club continued their success when they joined the Leinster Senior League in 1932, finishing third in their first season. The following year saw the club collect a cup treble, Leinster Senior League, Metropolitan Cup and The Intermediate Cup. Following this success the club applied for a place in the Senior League, and they were accepted along with Waterford. The clubs first season in the senior ranks wasn't ato be a disappointment with the club finishing third in the league and reaching the semi-final stage of the FAI Senior Challenge Cup. The clu had a disappointing season the following year, but were to make up for it during the 1937 season by liftiong their first league championship. Rovers reached their first FAI Cup final in 1939, but lost to Shelbourne. The club had never attracted the largest of crowds during their success and financial difficulties led to the club resigning from the league, they on ly stayed out for a few years and returned to the Senior set-up in 1949. The club came back into the league with a bang, finishing runners-up in the 1950 season. Rovers were relegeted from the league in 1963, having finished bottom, they objected by withdrawing membership from the FAI, the club later rejoined the FAI and the league, but not after a bust up with the local junior leagues. The sixties braught little silverwear to sligo. The seventies were much better for the club, lifting the league championship for the second time in 1977, and finishing runners up in the Cup in both 1970 and '79. They also finished runners up in the League Cup in 1975/75 and 1976/77 seasons, although not much had been won they had restored some pride. The 1980's finally braught a cup win, when Rovers lifted the FAI cup in 1983, they were to repeat this feat in 1994, having come up from the first Division as champions the previous season. There was room for one more piece of silverwear, the League Cup, which Rovers won in 1998. The club has in recent years been somewhat of a yoyo team, and promising form since christmas has seen the reds possible returning to the Premier Stage for football in Ireland. |
