Some AI Topics

Expert Systems

The goal of expert systems research was to program into a computer the knowledge and experience of an expert. Expert systems are used in medicine, business management, for searching for natural resources and much more.

Game Playing

One of the major areas of AI expansion is in the development of games. AI allows the computer to learn about it's users/players and therefore adapt to make the game as challenging as possible. In some of the newer games the computer will start off playing weakly if it feels the player is of a lower standard. It could also give it self an unfair disadvantage against human opposition if say the top level was selected. Another way AI is used in gaming is to remember what sort of playing style a player uses and therefore adapt to it next time round. This method requires some sort of a database backup and is often difficult to implement.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Under the field of computational linguistics in AI, one of the most difficult topics is NPL: removal of the language barrier between people. This involves communicating with application programs or expert systems in the most natural and efficient format. Pattern recognition in speech and visual scene analysis are therefore significant.

Robotics

Most of Artificial Intelligence will eventually lead to robotics, the field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating robots, devices that can move and react to sensory input. Most neural networking, natural language processing, image recognition, speech recognition/synthesis research aims at eventually incorporating their technology into the epitome of robotics - the creation of a fully humanoid robot.
