Arthur Miller
One of the greatest American playwrights, best known for "Death of a Salesman", though he's written lots of other great stuff.  One of my favorites is "The Creation of the World and Other Business", which is the story of Adam and Eve's creation, their banishment from Eden, and the story of Cain and Abel-as told by Miller.  I guess what I like is his existentialism-at least, there's something in all his work that speaks to me.  Okay, enough pretentiousness.  Another good play is The Crucible, which is based on the Salem witch trials and loosely refers to the McCarthyist communist hunt around the time it was written.

The Crucible : Fact & Fiction
'Course, if you believe that historical fiction is really true, you've got bigger problems than lack of knowledge.  Just think of the movie Anastasia.
