Fear Nothing

by Dean Koontz

This is a pretty standard horror story.  A guy living in a California town discovers something going on at the local abandoned Army base which shakes his view of his town, the people around him, the world in general, even his family.  No, I'm not going to tell you what it is, but you'll be a little shaken yourself, I can guarantee.  As good as the plot is, though, that's not why this book sticks with me.  The thing I really love about it is the main character.  No, not like that.  He has a genetic condition which affects his skin and eyes so that he can't be exposed to light very much, so there is a very strong awareness of light and darkness throughout the book.  Besides that, though, there is a constant awareness of his difference.  Being something of a genetic freak myself, I know how that feels.  And yet he doesn't let his problems rule him.  If he can't turn on lights in his house without giving himself skin cancer, he lights candles.  He figures that you have to take what you get from life and run with it.  It's the attitude that I spend every day struggling toward, and as stupid as it may sound to look up to a fictional character, I think I actually look up to him.  Anyway, read it for thrills if nothing else.
