Harry Turtledove

An expert on Byzantine history who writes really cool books set in alternate universes.  There are lots of different series.  The one I've read into is the Great War series, starting with How Few Remain, which I can heartily recommend, and the other one I'm planning to read is the Worldwar series, which takes place during World War II.  His best known book is probably Guns of the South.  Some of the other series and books are more fantasy than alternate history, and those are probably pretty good too.  As I've said many times in this page, I love history, but I think these books are enjoyable to those who don't, just because they're pretty dan good.
