Cassius is feeling bitter and decides to drag Brutus down into a plot to assassinate Caesar. The plot works. Many people die in the ensuing civil war. Octavius is left to rule Rome amid the pool of blood. Many reflections about the nature of life and leadership.
Is this the tragedy of Caesar or of Brutus? Brutus, obviously. Caesar dies too early on to really be that major a character. Now that we've settled that centuries-old debate... There are some nice speeches in here, especially (what else?) the one starting "Friends, romans, countrymen, lend me your ears". And any decent production has lots of good carnage in the last act. And why does Octavius end up leading Rome? He has no real connection with it at all as shown in the play. You would think Antony would be the logical choice. Other than that, I have no problems with this play.
