The Sound of Music (1965)

According to the Internet Movie Database, this movie's Mexican title is "Rebel Novice Nun", which makes the story sound a lot more exciting than it really is.  The script is pretty close to the original play though not completely, and Max and Else's two songs were cut, which dissapoints me because they were two of my favorites, but I guess the actor and actress couldn't sing.  And in this version Else talks Maria into going back to the abby the night of the big party, and Rolf does in fact inform on the family when he finds them, but of course they get away.  A couple of new songs were written-for some reason they needed "Something Good" to replace "An Ordinary Couple", I would have just cut the whole idea-and they also added "I Have Confidence", which is actually a good addition and does seem to be missing from the stage version.  Julie Andrews is wonderful.  In order for such a sappy story to work, whoever plays Maria has to completely sell it to the audience, because if she's rolling her eyes at it then they will too, and as stupid as it is it can really be a fun play if you buy into it.  I'm pretty sure that Julie Andrews didn't do her own singing, but let that go.  Whoever sings for her works very well.  All in all it's not bad, especially since stage productions are so hard to find now.
