Stir of Echoes

by Richard Matheson

This book inspired a little-known movie starring Kevin Bacon which I haven't seen.  I can tell you about the book (which came first by several years), though.  A regular guy, who works as an accountant at a factory, is hypnotized by his brother-in-law at a party.  Later that night he starts feeling strange and seeing things-first a ghost, but it only gets worse with time until he and his wife are worried about his sanity.  All of his visions and intuitions come true, leading to his stopping a babysitter from kidnapping his son and solving a murder.  After the whole murder thing is over the visions end, but he is stil left wondering.  Unlike many science-fiction-like thrillers, this one sticks with you.  I'm not really sure why.  That one husband-the son of a bitch across the street, I forget his name-just annoys me, and I'm glad he died.  I guess it's like Timequake-it reveals something essential about human life which the reader almost misses while thinking conciously about it.  Much more cool than many books of this genre.  i would recommend the movie too, just on principle.
