DESCENDANTS OF PETER HITT
1714 Immigrant to Germanna, in the Virginia Colony

INTRODUCTION

Genealogy is prone to actual and judgmental errors, and once an error is made and published,it seems to persist forever. Such is the case of Peter Hitt when he was "concluded to be" Peter Heite by B. C. Holtzclaw in Germanna Record Nos. 1 and 5.1,2 Holtzclaw, however, clearly stated that there were problems with his conclusion; which actually was an assumption:
"As we shall see at the end of this section, the ancestry of Peter Hitt, the 1714 Colonist, is more uncertain than that of most of the other Nassau-Siegen immigrants to Virginia."

The identification of Maria Elisabeth Freundenberg, the bride of 1707, with Elizabeth wife of Peter Hitt, the 1724 immigrant, is also difficult."

This family history does NOT accept the conclusion that Peter Hitt and Peter Heite are identical. For information on Peter Heite refer to Germanna Record No. 5,3 or the Heite web page.
The fact that Peter Hitt 'came to Virginia' in May 1714 and was placed at Germanna with twelve other German families and the fact that he and his wife 'Elizabeth' immigrated to Virginia can be documented, but, whether or not they were married when they arrived cannot be documented. There are a number of theories concerning the marriage of Peter Hitt (see controversy), none of which will be adopted here, therefore, his wife's maiden surname will be treated as unknown.
In 1720 or 1721, Peter Hitt and the other 1714 colonists moved north from Germanna and settled on 1805 acres of land along Licking Run. This place was known as Germantown. In 1724 the colonists made oath and claimed their head-rights in the court at Spotsylvania County.4
One source states that: "Peter Hitt was one of the members of the colony who, in the election of 1741, voted for members of the House of Burgesses from Prince William County, and that the fact that he voted, showed that he was naturalized and a free-holder."5 It should be noted that no record of Peter Hitt being naturalized has ever been found. Even though he owned (actually held a 99 year lease) and sold land in Virginia, no record has been found that Peter voted in any election in Virginia.
Peter Hitt is found in many official Virginia records, such as the following:
1. Peter Hitt testified at court about the division of land among the 12 Germanna families at Germantown in the suit between Jacob Spilman and his mother, Mary Dent.6
2. Peter Hitt was a witness to the will of Joseph Cowntz (Cuntze, Coons) another of the 1714 immigrants.7
3. Peter Hitt deeded 200 acres of land at Germantown (probably in trust): "Harman Fishback, in view of a marriage to be solemnized between himself and Mary Noe, widow, deeds to Peter Hitt 100 acres where Harman now lives and another 100 acres joining John Rector and Tillman Weaver in Germantown; test: Joseph Martin, William Coarns, John Kemper, George Dent".8
4. Peter Hitt witnesses a deed from Henry Cuntz to Tilman Weaver for 100 acres in Germantown adjoining Peter Hitt and Tilman Weaver, land which was left to Henry by the will of his father, Joseph Cuntz, dec'd.9
5. Peter Hitt, Jacob Weaver, Peter Kemper, all of Fauquier County, and Harman Fishback of Culpeper County deed to Tilman Martin 100 acres in Germantown, formerly set apart for the German glebe; test, Thomas Marshall, Tilman Weaver, Joseph Martin, Josiah Holtzclaw.10

FIRST GENERATION

1. Peter HITT11,12,13,14 was born about 1690 in Germany. Peter's place and date of birth can not be officially documented, therefore, for this family record Peter's birth date is estimated at about 1690 (by subtracting 25 years from the birth of his eldest child). Peter's place of birth may have been the Rehbach estate near Siegen, Germany, although there is no proof of this.
Peter died before 17 Jul 1772 in Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia. His will was written 23 March 1772 and was proved on 27 July 1772.15 The text of Peter's last will and testament is as follows:

It is believed that Peter and Elizabeth had six children born between 1715 and 1726.16 The birth dates seem to be about right based upon the fact that all of Peter's sons were of age and married in the 1740's.
Three of Peter's children were most likely born at Germanna and three at Germantown based upon their birth dates and the dates when the Virginia counties were formed. Germanna was in Essex County until about 1721 when it was a part of Spotsylvania County; it remaind a part of Spotsylvania County until Orange County was formed in 1734. Also considered is the fact that the families moved to Germantown in about 1721.
Peter and Elizabeth had the following children:17
2 i. John HITT was born about 1715 at Germanna, Essex County, Virginia and he died before 14 November 1782 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He married first Sarah PACE about 1742. He married second Mary on 23 August 1756.
+3 ii., Joseph HITT Sr. was born about 1717 at Germanna. (See NEXT GENERATION)
4 iii. Henry HITT was born about 1719 at Germanna, Essex County, Virginia and he died after 1782 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He married Alice Katherine HOLTZCLAW in Fauquier County, Virginia.
5 iv. Harmon HITT was born about 1721 at Germantown, Stafford County, Virginia and he died about 1820 in Fauquier county, Virgnia. He married Mary WEAVER before 14 December 1745 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
6 v. Mary Ann HITT was born about 1723 at Germantown, Stafford County, Virginia and she died about 1813 in Grayson County, Virginia. She married Jacob RECTOR about 1748.
7 vi. Peter HITT Jr. was born about 1726 at Germantown, Stafford County, Virginia and he died 31 August 1810 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He married Sarah JAMES on 27 April 1759 at Germantown.

SECOND GENERATION

3. Joseph HITT Sr.18,19,20,21,22 was born about 1717 in Germanna, Essex County, Virginia (now Orange County, Virginia)and he died after 1790 in Laurens County, South Carolina. Joseph and his family are difficult to establish. Court Records, The Germanna Records and the Jesse Martin manuscript assisted in developing this family.
Joseph served in the Fauquier County Militia in 1761 in Capt. William Edmond's Company. Joseph and his oldest son, John, were both Revolutionary soldiers and they served with Joseph's brothers, John and Harmon, in the same company. Joseph's nephew, John, Jr., served in the same company.23
On 9 December 1745, Joseph purchased 434 acres of land in Prince William County, Virginia from Nathaniel Hillery.24 He sold 217 acres of that plot to John Hitt, his brother, in 1745 and he transferred five acres to church wardens of Hamilton Parish on 12 March 1746.25 Joseph was appointed road supervisor for the Upper Marsh Road, which joined the lower Dum Friers Road. Joseph and Mary sold 214 acres of land on Turkey Run to John Duncan on 24 September 1770.26
Joseph is listed in the 1770 Rent Rolls for Fauquier County, Virginia, with 214 acres of land. There are a number of records in Fauquier County of Joseph Hitt buying, selling and leasing land.27 In 1771, Lord Fairfax deeded to Joseph 158 acres of land in Fauquier County known as the manor of Leeds. This land, which was located near Horseskin Branch was "...for and during the natural life of said Joseph and the natural lives of Mary, his wife, and Elisha, his son, and any of these longest living." Joseph contracted to build an adequate dwelling and to plant 150 good apple trees. Joseph sold a portion of this land to John Duncan:28
23 May 1774. b & S Bet. John Duncan & Elizabeth, his wife of Culp. Co. and Joseph Duncan, Sr. .. L30 .. tract in Ham. Par. .. bought by sd Duncan of Joseph Hitt .. 53 a .. oak on Marsh Road, joining Benj. Holtzclaw's land .. saplins in Bumbery's lin .. oak on sd. road near Turkey Run Church .. Signed: John Duncan, Elizabeth (X) Duncan. Wit: Jos. Blackwell, Thos. Keith, Samuel Blackwell. Rec. 26 Sept 1774, ack. by Grantors. Also: Alice, Elisha, Eve,Harmon, Henry, John, Peter HITT.
It is most likely that Harmon, Henry, John and Peter were Joseph's brothers; Elisha was Joseph's son, and Alice was Alice Holtzclaw (wife of Henry). Eve has not been identified.
Joseph still owned land in Virginia and was living on it in 1777 when he is listed in the rent rolls. However, in 1783 he was taxed only on his personal property, no tithable, which means that he no longer owned land in Virginia. Joseph and his family moved from Fauquier County, Virginia in about 1782. He is shown on the Culpeper County Tithables for the years 1782 through 1786.
Joseph moved to South Carolina after 1786. The 1790 Federal Census for Laurens County, South Carolina, shows a Joseph living in Laurens County with 2 males age 16 and up, 1 female, and no slaves. It is believed that one of the males in the listing was Elisha, Joseph's son. No record of Joseph has been found in deed indexes or in Probate Court records, testate or intestate.
The exact date of Joseph's death is unknown. One source states that Joseph, Sr. died in 1807, however, he most likely died prior to 1800 since he could not be located in the 1800 Census.
Joseph was married to Mary COONS (CUNTZE) (daughter of Joseph COONS(CUNTZE) and Catherine WEAVER) about 1740 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
Joseph and Mary had the following children, all born in Fauquier County, Virginia:
8 i. John HITT29,30 was born about 1740 and he died before 16 May 1836, Culpeper County, Virginia. John served in the Fauquier County Militia with his father in 1761, in Captain William Edmond's Company in the French and Indian War. John and his brother, Peter, served in the 9th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Continental Line. The Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Vol IV, Continental Line, The Invalid Regiment, June 20, 1777-1783, Harrisburg, Pa, 1906, lists all soldiers who received depreciation pay for services in the war. In the same book; "A return of the officers & men belonging to the Pennsylvania Line in the Invalid Reg't, from June 1777 to November 15th, 1784 is John Hitt, sick, present. Again, same reference; page 98, A return of the officers & men belonging to the PA Line in the Invalid Reg't from June 1777 to Nov. 15th 1784; John Hitt - Com'd, Mar. '83 - end'd Nov. '83. John Hitt's will was dated 11 March 1836 and was probated 16 May 1836. The will mentions his wife Luranna and children: daughters Elizabeth Jeffrice and Miriam Smith, and sons Joel, Joab, James and John. The will appoints Joab executor.31 He married Lurana KABLER and they had six children: John, Elizabeth, Miriam, Joel, James and Joab.32
+9 ii. Joseph HITT Jr. was born about 1742/43 (See THIRD GENERATION).
10 iii. Peter HITT was born about 1745 and he died about 1806 in Laurens County, South Carolina. He married Mary and they had six children: Thomas, Abner, David, Benjamin, Larkin, and Elizabeth. Peter was the first Hitt to purchase land in Laurens County, South Carolina. He bought 185 acres in November 1785 from Samuel Eakins.33 In June 1785, Peter sold 140 acres of land in Halifax County, Virginia to George Wiley,34 prior to moving to South Carolina, therefore, he must have moved to South Carolina in the summer of 1785. Peter died intestate and on 3 February 1806, Mary his wife, consented to the appointment of her sons David and Thomas as administrators of Peter's estate. In her consent Mary listed her children and appointed Lazarus Hitt, her brother-in-law, bondsman.35 When the 1810 Federal Census was taken, it is believed that Mary was living with her son Larkin in Laurens County.
11 iv. Lazarus HITT36,37,38 was born about 1750 and he died on 2 Aug 1823, Laurens County, South Carolina. He married first about 1772 Agnes MARTIN and they had seven children: Henry, Jesse, John, Sarah, Reubin, Unknown Daughter, and Benjamin. He married second Elizabeth and they had one child: Eve. During the American Revolution, Lazarus a merchant in Fauquier County, furnished supplies to the Revolutionary Army. After the Revolution, about 1785, Lazarus and his family moved to Laurens County, South Carolina where he is found in the 1790 Federal Census with 2 males over 16 years, 4 males under 16 years, 4 females, and no slaves. In December 1793, he sold 100 acres of land located on the waters of the Saluda River and on the north side of Banks Creek. He purchased 80 acres of land on Cane Creek from John Riley in December 1798.39
12 v. Mary HITT.40 Date of birth unknown. She married James Crockett41 and they had five children: Frederick, Elizabeth, Martha, Lucy and Dorothy.
13 vi. James HITT42 was born about 1766. James and his brother William are listed as independent tithables for Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1788. No other listings have been found.
14 vii. William HITT43 was born about 1767. William and his brothers are listed as independent tithables for Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1786-1814. William also appears in the 1800 Tax List for Fauquier County, Virginia.44 No other listings have been found.
15 viii. Elisha HITT45,46 was born after 1767. Elisha was named as a son of Joseph and Mary in the deed from Lord Fairfax for land in the mannor of Leeds.47 Because he was listed last, it is believed this could indicate that either he was the youngest or possibly incapable, mental/physical, of handling his own affairs and his parents were caring for him.48 It is believed that he is the second male listed with his father in the 1790 Federal Census.
16 ix. Lilly Ann "Lillian" HITT. Date of birth is unknown. Lillie married William BALL who was born about 1750 in Lancaster County, Virginia and died about 1805 in Laurens County, South Carolina.49 Lillie appears on an old DAR application as being the daughter of Joseph Hitt. It is questionable whether Lillie is a daughter of Joseph Hitt or even that she is a Hitt. However, she very possibly could be the daughter of Joseph Hitt, which would make some sense since we known that Joseph Hitt and the Ball and Martin families all move to South Carolina about the same time.

THIRD GENERATION

9. Joseph HITT Jr.50,51,52,53 was born about 1742/43 in Fauquier County, Virginia and he died before 21 Feb 1826 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Joseph came to Culpeper County, Virginia about 1790 and lived there until his death. He is listed in the Culpeper tithables after 1790.54 Joseph probably could not read or write English as on 21 January 1778 he witnessed a will for Bromfill Long by signing with his mark.55
Joseph patented land in Culpeper County: "Joseph Hitt assignee of French Strother assignee of William Thompson heir at law to Rev. John Thompson dec'd. 150 A. (9 Feb 1747) in Culpeper County in Great Fork of Rappahannock River adj. said Thompson, Samuel Coleman. 14 Mar 1798. (Inclosed F. Strother 10 May 1798)".56
A Joseph Hitt appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning three horses. This listing could also be for Joseph Hitt's son Joseph Hitt III.57 The 1820 Federal Census, page 78, lists Joseph, age 45+, and his wife, age 45+.
The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr. was written on 2 November 1825 and proved on 21 February 1826.58 Joseph's wife must have died before he made his will as there is no mention of her in his will. The will does list his heirs as: sons William, John, Joseph, James; daughters Peggy Vaughn (Baughn) and Mary Barnes. His third daughter died before the will was written. Among the purchasers at Joseph's estate sale, 3 March 1826, were the following: Joseph, William, John, Sr., Peter, Joel, James, Sr., Marshall, and James Hitt, Jr.59
There is much confusion over the children of Joseph, Sr. and Joseph, Jr. For this record the children of Joseph Hitt, Jr. are based upon his will and the Federal Census. The identity of the Hitts in attendance at the Joseph Hitt, Jr. estate sale are believed to be related as follows: Joseph Hitt was most likely the son of Joseph, Jr. and he is identified in this family record as Joseph III. Marshall and Peter Hitt are believed to be grandsons of Joseph, Jr. and the sons of Joseph Hitt III. (Joseph, Jr. had a brother named Peter but he died before Joseph, Jr.) James and William are also believed to have been the sons of Joseph, Jr. Joel was a nephew of Joseph, Jr.; the son of his brother John. The John, Sr. listed at the estate sale could have been Joseph, Jr.'s brother or his son, as both were still living at the time. James, Jr. remains unidentified.
Joseph was married but his wife's name is unknown. Joseph and his wife had the following children, the eldest two born in Fauquire County and the remainder born in Culpeper County, Virginia:
17 i. Elizabeth "Betsey" HITT was born about 1770. She married Russell VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN on 29 Dec 1791, Culpeper County, Virginia. They had as least one child: Nancy.60 Russell may be the son of Vincent Baughan/Vaughan who is believed to be the brother of Mordecai Baughan/Vaughan.
18 ii. John HITT was born about 1773. He is identified in the will of his father. On 25 Nov 1793 in Fauquier County, Virginia, he married Frances "Frankey" HOLTZCLAW who was born about 1770 in Fauquier County, Virginia.61 In 1807, John and Frances Hitt joined the other heirs of Joseph Holtzclaw in deeding the land they inherited from Joseph Holtzclaw to a brother, Eli Holtzclaw.62,63
+19 iii. Joseph HITT III was born about 1775.(See FOURTH GENERATION)
20 iv. Mary HITT was born about 1780.64 She is identified in the will of her father as daughter Mary (Hitt) Barnes.
21 v. Margaret "Peggy" HITT was born about 1782 and she died 9 May 1868 in Fayette County, Ohio. She is identified in the will of her father. She married about 1800 in Virginia, Lystra VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN who was born about 1777 in Virginia and died 5 Sep 1820 in Fayette County, Ohio.65,66 They had eight children: Berryman, Margaret Jane, John W., Joseph H., James M., Sarah Margaret, Susannah M., and Lystra.
22 vi. William "Billy" HITT was born about 1786 and died on 1 Nov 1865.67 He is identified in his father's will as a son and heir. He married on 24 Feb 1814 in Madison County, Virginia, Mary "Polly" AYLOR who was born about 1794 in Madison County, Ohio. They had ten children: Frances, Henry, Charles, William, Elizabeth Ann, Bluford, Martha, Elizabeth, and Mary. William is believed to have served in the War of 1812 and that his widow Polly applied for a pension based upon her husband's service.68 The family can be found in the 1850 and 1860 Census for Culpeper County, Virginia. In the 1850 Census, Martin Aylor age 53 was living with the William Hitt family. It is believed that Martin was a brother of William's wife. A child, Sarah F. Aylor age 7, was also living with the family; perhaps a daughter of Martin Aylor. In the 1860 Census, Sarah F. Aylor, age 18, was still living with the William Hitt family.
23 vii. James HITT69 was born before 1790 according to the 1830 Federal Census.70 The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr., identifies James as a son and heir. James Hitt is listed in the 1840 Federal Census for Culpeper County. This listing shows the household as: 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 5-10 years, 2 males 10-15 years, 1 male 15-20 years, 1 male 50-60 years, 2 females under 5 years, 1 female 5-10 years, 2 females 10-15 years, and 1 female 30-40 years old. It is believed that the family moved away from Culpeper County before the 1850 Federal Census was taken.

FOURTH GENERATION

19. Joseph HITT III71 was born about 1775 in Culpeper County, Virginia; according to the 1850 Federal Census. He died in Culpeper County, Virginia. The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr., identifies a son named Joseph as an heir.
Joseph appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning three horses. (This could also be Joseph's father, Joseph Hitt, Jr)72
In the 1820 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, page 80, Joseph's household was listed with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26-45. The 1830 Federal Census for Culpeper County lists the family with 2 males 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50. The 1840 Federal census for Culpeper County lists the family with 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 30-40, and 1 female 60-70. The 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, page 216, line 32-34, lists Joseph, III, as 74 years of age, Rhoda (Marshall) Hitt as 75 years of age, and daughter Mary G. Hitt as 41 years of age. The Census was taken on 24 July 1850. It lists Joseph's occupation as 'Farmer', and the value of his real estate as $330.00.
Joseph Hitt III could not be found in the 1860 Federal Census for Culpeper County either as a family head or living with his children. No will has been found for Joseph, and it is said that he gave his land and personal property to his daughter, Mary, before he died.
Joseph was married to Rhoda MARSHALL on 21 Jul 1796 in Culpeper County, Virginia.73 Minister: Frederick Kabler. The death record of Peter Hitt, son of Joseph Hitt, gives the names of his parents as Jos. & Roda Hitt, which is proof that Joseph married a lady named Rhoda (Roda), who is believed to be Rhoda Marshall. Rhoda MARSHALL was born about 1774 according to Census information; age in the 1850 Federal Census was 75.
Joseph and Rhoda had the following children:
24 i. John HITT was born 4 June 1794 in Culpeper County, Virginia and died there on 15 Dec 1851. He married on 22 Feb 1822 in Culpeper County, Elizabeth A. VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN who was born about 1802 in Culpeper County, Virginia and died there on 10 Sep 1883.74,75 John served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. John Thom's Company, Virginia Militia. He enlisted on 1 August 1814 and was discharged on 11 Feb 1815. His military record states that he served as a substitute for Joseph Hitt, who is believed to have been his father, Joseph Hitt III. The Record gives his widow's maiden name as: Elizabeth M. Vaughan; the residence of the soldier, Culpeper county, Virginia; the residence of the widow: Culpeper County, Virginia; marriage date: 22 Feb 1822 Culpeper County, Virginia; and the death of the soldier: 15 Dec 1851 Culpeper County, Virginia.76 The 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, lists John Hitt and his family. John's occupation was listed as a carpenter. Included in the Census listing was: John age 54, Elizabeth his wife age 48, Mary age 25, Lucy Ann age 23, Sarah O. age 21, Elizabeth age 17, Helen age 17, Cynthia age 15, William age 13, Franklin age 11, Virginia age 10, and Elvira age 9. All were listed as being born in Virginia.
+25 ii. Marshall Mathias HITT was born about 1802 in Rappahannock County, Virginia.(See FIFTH GENERATION)
26 iii. Peter HITT was born about 1805 in Madison County, Virginia and he died on 29 May 1891 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He married on 29 Oct 1840, Madison County, Emily C. MUNDAY who was born about 1818 and died about 1883 in Madison County, Virginia. The 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, gives Peter's age as 45; wife Emily C.'s age as 33; and lists the following children: son Andrew W. age 9, daughter Mary age 7, son Lewis C. age 5, son James age 3. It lists Peter's occupation as Shoemaker. The 1860 Federal Census for Rappahannock County, Virginia, gives Peter's age as 55; wife Emily's age as 42; and lists the following children: daughter Mary age 16, son Lewis age 12, son James age 10, son John age 9, daughter Isabell age 7, daughter Jenetta age 5, and son Russell age 1. Peter died at the home of his son John William Hitt. Polly, Peter, and Emily C. are buried in an unnamed cemetery, in unmarked graves, on the farm of John William Hitt.77,78 A certified copy of the record of Peter's death is filed in the archives of the Commonwealth of Virginia. This record states that Peter was a White Male and 86 years old when he died; cause of death was given as "old age"; place of death as Madison County; the names of his parents as: Jos. & Roda Hitt; that he was born in Madison County and was a farmer. The informant for the record was Jno. W. Hitt, Son; and the record was filed between 1891 and 1896.79
27 iv. Mary G. HITT was born about 1809 in Culpeper County, Virginia according to the 1850 Federal Census which gives Mary's age as 41. When the 1850 Federal Census was taken, Mary G. was living with her parents Joseph and Rhoda (Marshall) Hitt.
28 v. Mumford M. HITT was born 13 Oct 1811 in Culpeper County, Virginia and he died on 20 Oct 1881. He married on 14 March 1833, Culpeper County, Virginia, Elizabeth REYNOLDS who was born 16 Feb 1805 and died on 8 April 1883.80,81 The 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, gives Mumford's age as 39; his wife Eliza's age as 45; and his children as follows: son Silas(Thomas in 1870 Census) age 15, son Paschal age 13, son John age 11, son Franklin B. age 10, son Francis M. age 8, and son Henry age 5. FIFTH GENERATION

25. Marshall Mathias HITT82 was born about 1802 in Rappahannock County, Virginia according to the Death Certificate for George Washington Hitt, his son.83 This place of birth is believed to be correct even though the 1860 Federal Census for Culpeper County states that Marshall and his wife were born in Culpeper County, Virginia.
Marshall was among the purchasers at his grandfathers', Joseph's Hitt, Jr., estate sale on 3 March 1826. Marshall would have been about 24 years old at the time of his granfathers death. Other purchasers included the following Hitts: Joseph, William, John, Sr., Peter, Joel, James, Sr., and James, Jr.84 Of the others, Joseph was most likely Marshall's father, Joseph Hitt III; William was Marshall's uncle, brother of Joseph III; John Hitt, Sr. was probably a brother of Marshall's deceased grandfather, Joseph Hitt, Jr.; Joel Hitt was a son of John Hitt, Sr.; and Peter Hitt most likely was Marshall's brother. The identity of the two James Hitt have not been established.
The 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, page 216B, line 10, gives Marshall's age as 48; his wife Mary A. age as 48; and his children as follows: son James age 20 (Blacksmith), daughter Caroline A. age 19, son David C. age 17 (Farmer), daughter Martha age 15, son George W. age 13, daughter Mary E. age 10, son Martin age 8, son Burgess W. age 6, and son Walter Scott age 6 months. Marshall listed no assets and Virginia was listed as the place of birth of all family members. The 1860 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Southern Division, Virginia, page 876, line 12, lists Marshall's name as Martial and gives his age as 58; his wife Mary's age as 58; and his children as follows: daughter Bettie (Mary Elizabeth) age 20 a seamstress, son Martin age 17, son Burgis (Burgess) age 15, and son Walter age 10. The occupation of Marshall and his son Burgess was given as 'Miller".
Marshall was married to Mary Ann MILLER85 about 1827. Mary Ann was born about 1802 in Virginia according to the Federal Censuses of 1810, 1850 & 1860. In the 1910 Federal Census for Holt County, Missouri, George Washington Hitt, son of Marshall and Mary Ann (Miller) Hitt, listed his mother's birth place as Ohio, which is believed to be incorrect.
Marshall and Mary Ann had the following children:
29 i. James William HITT86,87was born about 1828 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and he died there about 1895.88 He married first Sarah E. FOUSHEE, 15 Feb 1853, in Culpeper County, Virginia, and they had two children: Annie E., and an un-named son. He married second Elizabeth Jane SMITH, 22 May 1882, in Culpeper County, and they had six children: Emma, Lulu, Luther, Joe, Effie, and Willie. In the 1850 Federal Census, James is listed with his parents living in Culpeper County, Virginia; age was listed as 20 and his occupation was listed as a Blacksmith. James and his family are listed in the1860 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia with: James age 30, wife Sarah age 32, and daughter Annie age 5. The 1870 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia lists the family: James age 42, Sarah age 43, and Annie age 15. According to Culpeper records, their were several children by James' second wife. James's occupation, from all references, was 'Blacksmith'. James W. is shown also in the 1880 Census for Culpeper County. He was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted March 1862 in Company A, 7th Virginia Cavalry, Stewards Brigade. He was captured in battle on 6 August 1863 near Brandy Station, and was held at Point Lookout.89
30 ii. Caroline A. HITT was born about 1831 in Culpeper County, Virginia.90 She married on 8 March 1858, Culpeper County, Virginia, Albert MITCHELL. No other information is available.
31 iii. David C. HITT was born about 1833 according to the 1850 Federal Census which gives his age as 17.
32 iv. Martha J. HITT was born about 1835 in Culpeper County, Virginia.91 She married on 27 Feb 1862, Culpeper County, Virginia, Silas B. HITT, son of Mumford and Elizabeth (Reynolds) HITT. Myers & Philips indicates that Silas was killed in the Civil War. This is obviously incorrect based upon the listing of Silas(Thomas) in the Federal Census as late as 1870.
+33 v. George Washington HITT was born on 9 Apr 1837 in Rappahannock County, Virginia.(See SIXTH GENERATION)
34 vi. Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" HITT was born about 1840 in Culpeper County, Virginia.92 She married on 12 Oct 1875, Culpeper County, Virginia, John Robert THORNHILL.
35 vii. Martin Luther HITT93 was born in Aug 1842 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He married first, 31 May 1866, Rappahannock County, Virginia, Frances Ann JOHNSON born about 1844, Orange County, Virginia. They had four children: William Edward, Thomas Marshall, Luther Steele, and Gertrude. Martin married second, 22 Feb 1888, Madison County, Virginia, Lucy Margaret THORNHILL, born about 1852. Martin was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted May 1861; Company G, 7th Virginia Infantry, Kemper's Brigade, Pickets Division; he was discharged 4 Jan 1865 on account of disability.94 This family lived near Slate Mills, Rappahannock, Virginia.
36 viii. Burgess Wellington HITT95 was born in July 1844 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He married, 14 Jan 1872, Madison County, Virginia, Martha Jane SMITH, born about 1852 in Madison County, Virginia. They had five children: Hubert F., Fred G., Cliffin, Jeanette, and Walter Theodore. Burgess served in the Civil War.
37 ix. Walter Scott HITT96 was born in Nov 1849 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and he died about 1909 in Fauquier County, Virginia.97 He married, 24 Dec 1874, Madison County, Virginia, Sarah Ann SMITH, born about 1851, Madison County, Virginia.

SIXTH GENERATION

33. George Washington HITT was born on 9 Apr 1837 in Rappahannock County, Virginia.98 He died on 2 Jan 1911 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri99 and is buried in Forest City Union Cemetery, Holt County, Missouri; no tombstone marks his grave.
Two very early histories of Holt County, Missouri100,101 indicate that George was living in Holt County in 1858, however, the actual date of arival of George in Holt County is unknown. The 1860 Census for Holt County shows George, age 24, living in a boarding house in Forest City and lists his occupation as 'carpenter'. Personal and County records show that George was first a carpenter and then a merchant and undertaker. The town of Forest City was laid out and the plat for the city was filed 16 May 1857, just prior to, or about the time George arrived in Holt County. One history102 reports that:
"The first school taught in Forest City, was during the winter of 1857-1858, in a small frame building. About ten years after, a brick public school building was erected on the summit of the abrupt hill-range, which divides the business from the residence portion of the town. This was a house fifty by twenty feet in area, with a hall through the center. M. Howley did the brick work, and G. W. HITT, one of the pioneer carpenters of the town, the wood work, ...."
In another quote from the same book:
"The Missionary Baptist Church was organized March 31, 1866 with twenty-four members, among them were C. J. Hart, G. W. HITT, ... ..Mrs. EMMA JANE HITT, ...."
In the 1850 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia, George is listed living with his parents, brothers and sisters; his age was given as 13. In the 1860 Federal Census for Forest City, Holt County, Missouri, George was found listed with the Joshua T. Sedwick (Sedric in the census) family as were six other adults, ages 23-33. Joshua Sedwick was the owner and operator of a Livery, Feed, and Sale Stable and the White Cloud and Forest City Stage Line.103 Because of the number of non-family members included in the Sedwick household, Joshua and his wife must have also operated a boarding house. Among the boarders were four men, including George, who listed their occupations as carpenter, and all were about the same age. The 1860 Federal Census shows that the entire Sedwick family was born in Virginia as were all but one of the boarders. According to the book Gone Home104, Elisabeth P. (Colvin) Sedwick was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. Since George Hitt is known to have lived in Culpeper County with his parent prior to coming to Holt County, Missouri, it is reasonable to believe that he may have known the Sedwick family and some of the other boarders prior to moving to Forest City.
The 1870 Federal Census for Lewis Township, North Point P.O., Holt County, Missouri, lists George Hitt and his family. The census also listed Nancy Snider, age 60, born in Kentucky, mother of Emma Jane, living with the family. Nancy Snider does not appear in the 1876 Special Missouri Census nor in the 1880 Federal Census for Forest City. Although Holt County, and specifically Forest City, has some records on families with the surname Snider and its variations, a family for Emma Jane could not be found. It is believed that Emma Jane's parents were never residents of Forest City or Holt County. George may have met and married Emma Jane outside Missouri, possibly in Kentucky during or after hi s civil war service. To date no record of Nancy's death has been found in Holt County, therefore, it is reasonable to believe that she must have returned to her home, presumably in Kentucky.
George Hitt was a Civil War veteran, which is confirmed by the 1910 Federal Census for Holt County, therefore, he must have been in the service sometime between 1861 and 1864, and prior to his marriage on 8 December 1864. The most likely possibility is that George enlisted in a Virginia Company, since three of his brothers, Martin Luther, James William and Burgess Wilmington also enlisted and served in Virginia with six cousins, all sons of Mumford Hitt. A search of the Virginia records found a George H. Hitt who served in Co. E, 7th Virginia Infantry, CSA, that is believed to be the Civil War record of George Washington Hitt.105
The period after George's first marriage can be documented in considerable detail, using family documents, census data, business documents and licenses, and the book Gone Home. The 1876 Special Missouri Census and the 1880 Federal Census shows the George Hitt family living on Walnut Street in Forest City, Lewis Township, Holt County, Missouri; wife, George's first wife, Emma Jane, is missing from both census listings, having died 16 September 1873. The 1880 Federal Census listed, in the George Hitt household, a Mrs. Hannah K. Howell as a servant, occupation housekeeping, who later became wife number two.
George Hitt's business activities can be documented after the 1870's by many original business receipts, licenses, Holt County records, and the book Gone Home. George's first business venture was as an undertaker, and in the 1880 Federal Census he listed his occupation as Carpenter & Undertaker. Records show that George built and sold coffins and other undertaking goods. In the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census records, George listed his occupation as Furniture Dealer. George's business activities are known to have been quite varied, however, he concentrated on cabinetry, furniture, coffins and undertaking supplies. A receipt for telephone equipment (from a cousin who owned the Forest City Telephone system) indicates that George dabbled in the installation of telephone lines and phones. At one point in his career (1885), George served as the Supertendent of the Forest City Union Cemetary.
George's furniture and undertaking business was conducted from the second floor of a building owned by John M. France, whose daughter, Florence, married George's son William Marshal Hitt. John M. France purchased the building in Forest City about 1870 where he and his son operated a very successful Drug Store on the ground floor. During a visit to Holt County in July 1991, Eileen Derr, the author of the book Gone Home showed kitchen furniture purchased from the furniture store operated by George Hitt. Mrs. Derr noted that both George Hitt and John M. France were leading business men in Forest City during their lifetime. In a newspaper advertisement in 1885, George advertised that he was a dealer in furniture and undertaker's goods. In the furniture store he stocked and sold: bedspreads, bureaus, chairs, couches, etc. In the undertakers area of his business he stocked and sold: burial robes, coffins, and associated goods. Records exist in Holt County of the sales of coffins and services to the county during the period 1900 through 1905. It is generally believed that George and his son Charles E. Hitt actually built the coffins that he sold.
George was married first to Emma Jane SNIDER (daughter of Nancy SNIDER) on 8 Dec 1864.106 Emma Jane was born on 13 Aug 1839 in Kentucky107 and she died on 16 Sep 1873 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri at the age of: 34 years, 1 Month, 2 Days. She is buried in Forest City Union Cemetary, Holt County, Missouri.
George and Emma Jane had the following children:
38 i. Eva Belle HITT was born in Nov 1865 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. Few records exist on Eva Belle Hitt, however, it is believed that she never married. The 1910 Federal Census for Holt County lists Eva B., 44 years old, single, a teacher in the Public School, and living at home with her father, George Hitt, and his second wife. Forest City residents say that Eva also taught school in the near-by town of Oregon, Missouri, the county seat of Holt County. School records were lost when the Holt County Court House burned in the 1960's, therefore, there are no records of Eva's teaching career. Eva could not be located in the 1920 Federal Census for Holt County.
+39 ii. William Marshall HITT was born on 30 Jul 1868 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri.(See SEVENTH GENERATION)
40 iii. Charles Edward HITT was born in July 1869 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died 25 May 1944 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. Charles married first, 13 Aug 1893, Oregon, Holt County, Missouri, Beatrice Nona JAMISON, born 2 Apr 1875, Forest City, died Jan 1952, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. They had one child: Rena Margaret. Charles married second, Nettie Mae EVERETT, born 1 Dec 1884, died 5 Jan 1968, Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. Records on Charles are limited but, it is known that he was a carpenter (1900 Federal Census) and was active in the undertaking business of his father, building coffins. There is no record of Charles in the 1910 Census for Holt County, Missouri; he had probably moved from the county. It is known that Charles lived for some time in Tulsa, Oklahoma and that he died there and is buried in the William Marshall Hitt cemetary plot in Rosehill Cemetary.
41 iv. Alvin Rhodes HITT was born about 1871 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died there on 23 Feb 1896 (about 25 years old). He died of a liver ailment and was ill for a year before his death. He was buried in Forest City Union Cemetary, Holt County, Missouri, however, his grave site is not marked and could not be found.

OBITUARY FOR ALVIN RHODES HITT Son of George Washington Hitt and Emma Jane (Snider) Hitt Died: 23 February 1896

Died at the home of his parents in Forest City on Sunday, February 23, 1896, Alvin R. Hitt, aged 25 years. The blow was not unexpected, but it was no less terrible when it came. For days his life hung in the balance, and at last his feeble frame gave way, and he shut his eyes to the scenes of earth forever. For the past year he had been feeble health, and all that was possible was done by fond parents and friends to restore him, but his disease, that of the liver, gradually worked its way, until the day named and he was forever released from his suffering. At his home and wherever he was known the deceased was respected and esteemed by all. He was unusually cheerful land insinuating in his manner and address, and was warmly loved by his associates, and his society was at all times, sought. The deceased was known to many of our young people, who with THE SENTINEL extend to the bereaved family their deepest sympathy in their deep sorrow. When one has journeyed on earth his three-score and ten years, we do not feel the loss so keenly as for one who is taken away in the morning of bright life. So with "Al" Hitt, we deeply regret his death.
42 v. Cora Lee HITT was born on 12 Apr 1872 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and she died there on 6 Jun 1872; age at death was: 1 month, 24 days. She is buried in Forest City Union Cemetery, Holt County, Missouri.

George's second marriage was to Hannah Kesiah (Shutts) HOWELL on 14 Jun 1892 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri.108 George was 56 and Hannah was 51 when they married. Hannah Kesiah was born in April 1839 in Michigan. Hannah's marriage to George Hitt was also her second marriage, and she had two children by her first husband. Not much is known about Hannah's parents except that her father was from New York and her mother was from Massachusetts. The George Hitt family owned and occupied lot 9, block 34, in Forest City, and Hannah owned lot 10, block 34. Receipts for property taxes show that George paid the taxes on both lots for several years before he an Hannah were married.
In the 1920 Federal Census for Holt County, Missouri, Hannah K. Hitt was listed as 76 years old, born in Michigan, and living in the household of Elihu Broch in Forest City; she was listed as a servant in a hotel.

SEVENTH GENERATION

39. William Marshall HITT was born on 30 Jul 1868 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died on 14 Dec 1937 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. William is buried beside his wife and his brother, James, in Rosehill Cemetary, Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. Only one stone marks the three graves; the stone is inscribed: William M. Hitt.
The 1900 Federal Census shows William was married and living in Forest City, Missouri with his wife, Florence Lee, and sons Earl Lee, and Harold A. Hitt. The 1910 Federal Census lists the family and the last of the four brothers, Robert F. and George W. Hitt. The 1920 Federal Census shows William was still living in Forest City, Missouri, with his wife Florence and two sons, Robert and George. William's eldest son, Earl, was married and living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Harold, the second son was living with his brother, Earl and his family, in Tulsa. The 1900 and 1910 Federal Census records show that William had two other children that had died before the 1920 Federal Census was taken. The two deceased children have been identified as Grace, who died at birth, and Russell who died at the age of 2. The earlier censuses list the occupation of William Hitt as the manager of the Ice Factory in Forest City.
In 1898, William Marshall Hitt was the cashier (and teller) of the Home Bank of Forest City, which was founded by John M. France, Sr., William's father-in-law (See web page on the France Family). In 1897, William Hitt and William Richardson purchased the Excelsior Factory which was established in Forest City by John A. Richardson (Wm Richardson's father). The Excelsior Factory became the Forest City Ice Plant and began operating 3 July 1908 with William Hitt as the manager. The following is an excerpt from the Forest City News, 1912:
.... (the Ice Factory) had equipment that was not surpassed by the equipment of the largest city factories.... Ice is made from water pumped from a 96 foot drilled well which provided soft, pure Missouri water, purified by a natural strata of sand and filtered through charcoal.... The water is double distilled and frozen. The ice factory runs day and night with a capacity of sixty-five tons of ice daily. A dynamo furnishes electric lights and power for the plant. Five thousand gallons of ice cream is manufactured per season at the ice factory and it finds a ready market in the surrounding area.
In another news article in 1912:
....J. B. Reeves and W. M. Hitt are turning out the best quality ice cream. For the treat of your life visit the Forest City Ice Company.
In April 1913, William Hitt was noted as the undertaker for a burial and it is believed that William operated his father's furniture store and undertaking businesses for a short period of time after his father's death. The 1920 Federal Census shows that William returned to the Bank in Forest City where he was employed as a bookkeeper.
The William Marshall Hitt family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma sometime in the early 1920's where William was employed by Sinclair Pipeline Company until he died. Their home was located at 734 N. Delaware Place, on the east side of Tulsa.
William was married to Florence Lee FRANCE (eldest daughter of John M. FRANCE and Lucy KING) on 15 Jan 1890 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. William and Florence's marriage license was located in the Holt County Court House in Oregon, Missouri. Florence Lee was born on 16 Sep 1868 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland and she died on 17 Oct 1952 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma and is buried in Rosehill Cemetery there.
William Marshall and Florence Lee had the following children:
+43 i. Earl Lee HITT was born on 3 Mar 1891 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. (See EIGHTH GENERATION)
44 ii. Grace HITT died stillborn in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and she is buried in Forest City Union Cemetary, Holt County, Missouri.
45 iii. Russell HITT was born about 1896 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died there on 10 Dec 1898. He is buried in Forest City Union Cemetary, Holt County, Missouri.
46 iv. Harold Albert HITT was born 6 Apr 1900 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died 9 March 1933 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. He married, 4 June 1921, Bois D'Arc, Greene County, Missouri, Arvia Erskine SALTS, born 17 July 1900, Bois D'Arc, died 13 Feb 1985 in Port Charlotte, Charlotte County, Florida. Harold met Arvia Erskine Salts, a sister of Jessie Arisona (Salts) Hitt, during a vacation of the Earl Lee Hitt family in Bois D'Arc, Missouri. In the early 1920's, the family spent many of their vacations in Missouri, traveling from Tulsa to the Springfield area in a model T car over roads that sometimes were almost impassable. Harold, Earl's brother, lived with Earl's family for several years and he would generally vacation with the family. At first Arvia paid little attention to Harold, because she thought Harold really couldn't be interested with a farm girl like her. Arvia's mother told her that "she could at least be nice to him while he was a visitor in their home". Eventually she became attentive to Harold, and was supprised when she received a proposal of marriage by mail. After their marriage, Harold and Arvia moved to Tulsa where they first lived with the William Marshall Hitt family. Harold was employed at the Colonial Drug Company in Tulsa. He was envolved in a bad automobile accident on his way to work; the car was broadsided by another car. Some believe that this accident lead to his early death, however, Harold died of cancer. Harold was buried in Clear Creek Cemetary near Springfield, Missour; funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Bois D'Arc, Missouri. After Harold's death in 1933, Arvia married Glenn Embrey and they moved to Mountain View, Missouri where they lived until Glenn retired from the Postal Service. On retirement, Glenn and Arvia moved to Port Charlotte, Florida where they lived until their deaths. Arvia is buried next to her first husband in Clear Creek Cemetary near Springfield, Missouri. Glenn Embrey is buried next to his first wife in Green Lawn Cemetary in the Springfield area. Arvia was childless through both of her marriages. Glenn and his first wife had three children: Athy Embry, Tampa, Florida; James E. Embry, an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Bessie Lou Embrey, Tampa, Florida.
47 v. Robert France HITT was born 30 Dec 1905 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died 12 Sep 1954 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. He married, 4 Aug 1929, Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, Gladys Lorene LYNCH, born 8 Apr 1909, died Apr 1983 in Wheaton, Du Page County, Illinois. The had one child: Lorraine Florence. Robert France Hitt was educated in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. He moved to Tulsa with his parents in the early 1920's where he was employed by Western Union and where he was president of the Labor Union. Robert's job was to attend the local baseball and football games and report the action via Western Union. His daughter remembers attending University of Tulsa football games with her father as he reported the game via telegraph. Robert was superintendent of the Sunday School at Nogales Baptist Church when he met Gladys Lynch, the church secretary. Robert and Gladys spent their honeymoon at Falls Creek Assembly. Later in his life, Robert was a Sunday School teacher at the University Baptist Church. After Robert Hitt's death, and until 1982, Gladys lived alone at 167 North College in Tulsa. She spent the holidays with her daughter and son-in-law in Wheaton, Illinois after they moved there in 1968. After Thanksgiving 1982, Gladys went to Wheaton to spend the Christmas holidays with her daughter and family and it was during this visit that Gladys complained of not feeling well, was taken to the hospital, and was diagnosed as having cancer. After two months of chemo and other treatments, Gladys left the hospital and she died approximately one month after being released from the hospital. She was returned to Tulsa, Oklahoma for burial.
48 vi. George William HITT was born 10 Oct 1909 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died 16 Nov 1941 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He married, 9 June 1931, Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, Doris Marie WOODWARD. George moved to Tulsa with his parents in 1921 where he met and married Doris. George was the Choir Director at the Nogales Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Doris was their pianist. George and Doris moved to Chickasaw, Okalhoma where he was the Music and Educational Director at the First Baptist Church of Chickasaw. It was at this church that Dr. W. A. Crisswell was the pastor; his first church after graduating from seminary.109 George left Chickasaw to become the Music and Educational Director of the Memorial Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From Oklahoma City, George and Doris moved to the East Grand Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. The pastor at East Grand Baptist, formerly pastor of the church in Chickasaw, asked George and Doris to join him in Dallas. George was in Dallas only a short time when he was hospitalized and was diagnosed as having pnuemonia, however, after he died an autopsy revealed that he had died of cancer. After George died, Doris married Dr. Hubert Driggs on 3 February 1943 at East Grand Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. In August 1991, Dr. Driggs was contacted by telephone and noted that he is retired and living in Rockwall, Texas a suburb of Dallas. Dr. Driggs also noted that Doris had been in poor health for a number of years and was then confined to a nursing home in Garland, Texas. Doris and Hubert Driggs have an adopted daughter, now 42, who is married and has two children.

EIGHTH GENERATION

43. Earl Lee HITT was born on 3 Mar 1891 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri and he died of a heart attack on 10 Apr 1946 shortly after midnight in Memorial Hospital, Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma. He is buried in the Masonic Section of Memorial Park Cemetary, Sec 11, Lot 77, Space 3, Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma.
Earl Lee was educated in Forest City, Missouri and became a self-taught musician. In 1904, he was a member of the Forest City Cornet Band which was directed by Skeet Elton. The band also included: Cecil Heacock, Cecil Richardson, Arthur & Wesley Cook, Noel Sheets, James Beard, Leonard Meyers, Will Terry, Ned Combs, Ernest Thornhill, Floyd Murray and Bruce Bullock.
In the 1900-1911 period, Earl was the telephone operator and then the secretary of the F. M. Telephone Company in Forest City (from records and receipts of the telephone company). An old photograph shows him in the telephone company's office sitting in front of the telephone operator's board; nearby is the bicycle he used to deliver phone messages. The telephone company was the first in Forest City and was originally a private line, built in 1890, between Oregon and Forest City. John France, Jr., a Hitt cousin, was the owner, manager and the board of directors, at Forest City.
For several years before he was married, Earl traveled with a Baptist revival minister as his 'Song Leader'. It was during a revival meeting in Bois D'Arc Baptist Church in about 1913 that he met Jessie Arisona Salts; whom he later married. After their marriage, the family lived in Springfield, Missouri where Earl was employed by the Frisco Railroad where he also served as the religious director of the First Baptist Church. The family moved to a farm in Aurora, Missouri where they lived for only a few months and then on to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in about 1918/1919 where Earl was employed by Sinclair Pipeline Company as a Senior Draftman.
Earl, his wife and his oldest son were located in the 1920 Federal Census living on Xanthus Street in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma; Earl's occupation was listed as a Civil Engineer. The Census also listed Earl's brother, Harold, living with the family. Harold was single, 20 years old, and listed his occupation as clerk in a drug store.
Earl developed blood poisoning in one leg about a year before the great depression of 1929. On his doctor's recommendation, he quit his job with Sinclair and went to work for a Tulsa newspaper as a bulk newspaper distributor. He took this job because it entailed outdoor activities and the exercise his doctor convinced him that he needed. The timing of this job change was, however, unfortunate. The great depression threw Earl out of work and he remained unemployed, except for part-time work, until 1936. During the depression, he worked for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and other Government agencies set up to assist unemployed. In 1936 Earl was employed in the Engineering Department of Phillips Petroleum Company and the family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Earl worked and lived in Bartlesville until his death in 1946.
Earl Lee Hitt was a member of Bartlesville Lodge No 284, AFAM where he was raised to a Royal Arch Mason. He was president of the local chapter of War Dads during World War II, and at the time of his death was serving as national representative of the War Dads. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville.
Earl was married to Jessie Arisona SALTS (daughter of William Franklin SALTS and Martha Thomas HAYNIE) on 1 Jul 1914 in Bois D'Arc, Greene County, Missouri.110
Jessie Arisona SALTS was born on 1 May 1890 in Bois D'Arc, Greene County, Missouri111 and she died on 12 Jan 1981 in St. Louis, Missouri.112 She is buried beside her husband in Memorial Park Cemetary, Sec 11, Lot 77, Space 3, Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma. Jessie was an active housewife who raised three sons and was instrumental in raising a grandson. After the death of her husband in 1946, she continued to live in Bartlesville, Oklahoma where she was employed for the first time in her life as a seamstress at Montaldos, a womens fashion store. She became a much sought-after seamstress, finally leaving Montaldos to work on her own. In 1979, because of failing health, she was moved to a retirement facility in Ellisville, Missouri (a suburb of St. Louis). She died in a nursing home in St. Louis. Jessie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville, and a member of the Bartlesville Chapter of Eastern Star.
Earl Lee and Jessie Arisona had the following children:
49 i. Frank William HITT was born 18 April 1916 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri and he was declared dead by the Social Security Administration in July 1971. He married first, 25 March 1958, Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma, Bette Ellen JACOBSEN, born 21 June 1919 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. They had one child: Sharan. Frank married second, about 1943, Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma, Mildred Evalyn MARTIN, born 3 Sep 1912 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had one son: James Lee Hitt. From what little is known, Frank may have had at three wives, and there is the possibility of other children. To date, the third wife and children's identities are unknown. Frank William Hitt graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1932. Even in school, Frank was first and always a musician, his main ambition was to be recognized as an accomplished trumpet player. On 25 April 1937 Frank applied for a social security account number (SSN 441-10-7651). He was 20 years old and living with his parents at 538 East 14th Street, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. At the time he was the lead trumpet with the Loren Towne Orchestra, with headquarters at 720 North 1st Street, Aberdeen, South Dakota. Frank worked for Phillip Petroleum Company in Bartlesville and served in the United States Army in World War II at home and in Europe. After WW II, Frank was employed by ARAMCO in Saudi, Arabia from 13 April 1950 until 1 February 1952 (information provided from company records at Saudi Aramaco, Houston, Texas). The Social Security Administration originally said that Frank died in July 1971, but that they were not informed of his death until 1981 when a claim for survivors benefits was filed. The SSA has been very uncooperative, but under pressure, indicated that survivors benefits were being sent to a widow in California (California has no death certificate for Frank). The Social Security Addministration finaly admitted that they had no death certificate for Frank, nor any proof that he is dead (1992). They made an administrative decision based upon the fact that Frank had not paid into Social Security since 1964. Therefore, seven years later, July 1971, SSA declared Frank dead for the purposes of paying survivors benefits.
+50 ii. Earl Junior HITT was born on 17 Sep 1920 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. (See NINTH GENERATION)
51 iii. Eugene Allen HITT was born 14 Sep 1924 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. During World War II, Eugene attended Texas University at Austin, Texas under the U.S. Navy V-12 program; he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering; and then served in the Navy at Norfolk, Virginia. In 1952 Gene was employed by Chance Vought Aircraft, Dallas, Texas (now LTV, Corp.). He left Chance Vought for a position as regional sales manager for Walter Kidde Company in St. Louis, Missouri in about 1956. He became an independent industrial representative in 1969. 17. Ibid., The journal gives the birth order and dates, however, the will of Peter Hitt creates some doubt as to the order of birth. John, Joseph, and Harman are named first in his will which is strong evidence that the were the older children. Peter specifically states: "I do nominate and appoint my two eldest sons, Harman Hitt and Joseph Hitt . . .", which creates some doubt that John was the oldest child; that perhaps Harman and Joseph were his first born.
