What follows is a brief history of volleyball and how it became the sport it is today. Also included is a history of volleyball in Britain and as much history about the England Junior Men as could be found.
The game of volleyball was invented in 1895 by William. G. Morgan. He was the physical director of the YMCA, Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan wanted a game for business men that was less stressful than basketball (also invented by the YMCA). Originally he called it Mintonette, but after a demonstration to YMCA officials he agreed to change the name - the new one was suggested by the YMCA due to the balls flight path.
Although the first national organisation was in Canada in 1900 the rule of only six players per team was not introduced until 1916. In China, teams played 16 a side at this time as it was seen as a mass participation sport. At the same time in Eastern Europe, they were having national tournaments and had achieved a remarkable standard.
The world VB federation, FIVB was founded in 1937. The first world championships was held for men only in 1949 and for men and women in 1952. Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964.
