Fed up with over-paid fancy-dan footballers like those which can be found "strutting their stuff" in the big championships of Europe and South America? Had enough of their pansy play-acting? Are you yearning for players who will sweat blood, and give their all for their jersies in an environment of highly-competitive passion and local rivalries? Look no further. You have found Scottish Junior Football.
There are basically three levels to the Scottish game of football: senior, junior and amateur. The big internationally known clubs, such as Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic are senior clubs, as are all the teams in the Scottish League. There are also other senior clubs outside the League, such as the Highland League or South of Scotland League.
The junior game is not what it might sound like. Junior football is not a league for children, or youths (in fact, players in junior teams tend to be older than those playing with senior teams). Junior teams are, unlike the unpaid amateurs, generally semi-professional, and play inside their own league set-ups, divided regionally (eg. Ayrshire, Central, East, Fife, North).
The big junior tournament is the Scottish Junior Cup, a tournament with over a century-worth of history. This involves all the junior clubs in Scotland, from the various leagues, and so could be viewed as the mini-equivalent of continental club compeitions such as the European Champions Cup, or South American Copa Libertadores. The most successful side in the cup's history so far are Ayrshire outfit Auchinleck Talbot - junior football's answer to Real Madrid. (He says, somewhat tongue-in-cheek!)
Below are a couple of links to external sites dealing with Junior football, but you don't have to even leave this site to learn about the greatest of them all: Bo'ness United.
