In a match which provided precious little in the way of good football, Bo'ness secured a valuable first league win of the season. However, they had to leave it late before getting the winning goal against a Camelon side who finished with ten men.
It was an uninspiring first half in which chances were few and far between. The home side were marginally on top in a poor midfield battle, but only came as close as an effort hit wide by Ward which nearly caught the goalkeeper off guard. A goalbound shot from the young forward then struck his team-mate
Loney and deflected away as Bo'ness struggled to penetrate the visiting defence. Against the run of play, Camelon might have sneaked in front just before the break, but a looping header from No. 10 bounced to safety off the crossbar; then No. 9 sliced an opportunity wide from the edge of the box.
The second period was notably more exciting, even if the quality of the football did not raise appreciably. In an explosive start, the BUs almost went in front
when an attempted clearance by the Camelon No. 6 came off his own bar, and then Darryl Drew sent a long-range effort just wide.
But as it appeared Bo'ness were about to stamp their authority on the match, Camelon were unlucky to be denied only by a fine stop from Binnie, whose hand slowed the ball enough for a defender to clear off the line.
A little after the hour, Bo'ness new boy Kevin Inglis drew an excellent save out of the Camelon 'keeper with a powerful low drive, before he made another good save from a well-placed Kemp free-kick.
The second half had been threatening a goal, and it finally came after 72 minutes when right back Smith volleyed home superbly after substitute Hodge, picked out in the box by Kevin Inglis' long cross-field pass, clipped the ball into the onrushing no. 2's path.
Although Bo'ness looked set to consolidate their position, the lead only lasted five minutes though, before a volley from ten yards had Binnie beaten after the defence failed to clear a cross.
With eleven minutes left, Camelon were forced to defend for the draw when No. 5 was ordered off - perhaps harshly - after somewhat recklessly challenging for the ball as Brian Kemp lay on the floor.
And they nearly held out - but with 88 minutes on the clock, a Kemp shot from 20 yards was deflected in the crowded penalty area past the goalkeeper by his own no. 6.
A narrow win, but Bo'ness just about deserved it.
Bo'ness: Binnie; Smith, King, Black (Hodge), Yates, C Inglis, K Inglis, Kemp, Loney, Ward (McKinlay), Drew.
